There's been a lot of buzz going around lately about the role of Mary Jane Watson in the Amazing Spider-Man sequels. But Andrew Garfield recently pitched his own unique idea for the character: What if MJ was a guy?
While speaking with EW.com, the actor said he recently had a conversation with producer Matt Tolmach about Mary Jane and what he'd like to see. "I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ," Garfield said. "And I was like, 'What if MJ is a dude?' Why can't we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It's hardly even groundbreaking! So why can't he be gay? Why can't he be into boys?"
Garfield even knows who he'd want to play the part. "I've been obsessed with Michael B. Jordan since The Wire. He's so charismatic and talented. It'd be even better -- we'd have interracial bisexuality!"
Later, EW mentioned Garfield's idea to director Marc Webb, who said, "Michael B. Jordan, I know." When asked if he'd already heard the pitch, Webb replied, "Uh, are you kidding?"
You know, it's funny; obviously a lot of comic book and Spiderman fans are kicking up a big stink over this, but people's biggest problem seems to be changing Spiderman's sexuiality. Sure, I would find it upsetting myself considering that's not the Spiderman I've known for the majority of my life, but like Andrew said "Why can't he be into boys too?". I don't have a issue with gay superheros nor if they wanted to explore the sexuiality of a already known one. My biggest beef with it all is that they want to change a already known character (Mary Jane) and change them into someone else entirely. If you're going to make Spiderman gay or bi-sexual, make a NEW character or use a already existing male character. Don't take a character people have known for YEARS and have been quite famous in the Marvel Universe, and make them a whole different character with a whole new sex. It's just a slap to the face for the fans of that character, and to Spiderman fans themselves.
I highly doubt this will actually happen, but I just wanted to see what you guys think of it all.

I don't like changing characters for the sake of change. Spider-man is an established character with relatively few characters that take up the title besides Peter Parker. Peter's not gay, and I think it only trivialize the gay community to make him that way. Like we can't have successful gay superheroes without making an icon gay. Which is utterly untrue. Batwoman, for instance, is completely kickass while being written as a solid character that happens to be a lesbian. The difference between her and Spider-man is that Spidey being gay would be a statement for all the wrong reasons. It would be a statement entirety about homosexuality which is not what Spidey or Peter has ever represented. Batwoman doesn't even entirely represent homosexuality, which is a good thing. I'm personally tired of people exaggerating homosexuality to the point where they entirely defeat the purpose of bringing it up. To make us seem as normal as everyone else. Make a superhero gay on their own names, and make their sexuality a facet of their character rather than the focus. Otherwise, I don't think you're respecting the topic.
