A girl in my school recently got cancer, and died. Then just yesterday there was a car crash and another girl in my school is in coma.
and when people came and spoke to me about it, I simply said
'Shit Happens.'
they looked at me funny, because I was being serious.
One of my friends in my class killed themselves (after being bullied) and the people who knew nothing about him and the people who were bullying him broke down and cried and they literally had to close school down for a day due to the amount of people who were upset by it. It went on for weeks, people having to go to consoling because of it. In November it marks the 7 year anniversary of his death and not a single one of those fuckers remember his name and not a single one of them showed up to his funeral.

Shit does indeed happen, but sympathy is still not a redundant trait.

What are you supposed to do, break down and cry for them? Kind of hard to feel sympathy for people you hardly know, especially when stuff like this happens on a regular basis.
-
"Sucks to be them" would've been an equally (in)appropriate answer.

I would have shown some human emotion. I mean someone did just watch their child die from a disease and they weren't able to do anything about it. Honestly I think that's heart breaking. I can only feel so much for them though. It's hard to relate when you don't know them but its still sad.

well you aren't wrong shit does happen
