So what do you think of J-RPG's? I personally do not often play them, but I hear split opinions. One of them (which is biased, heavily, kinda redundant) is that it is 'so much like anime', which is well...untrue, unless based around an anime. But people talk about great stories, but bitch about turn-based combat.
Me? I'm grey.
What about you, player?

The basic formula premise is fine. The basic formula being: -Focus on narrative -Separation of you the player from the Main Character -Party of characters which interact with each other Far too often though, the actual narrative is full of shit because of Japan's need to over the top EVERYTHING. The narrative and the main character sound like they were designed by seven year olds: "My guy is a master swords man! And he can shoot lasers from his eyes! And he can breath fire! And he can fart lightning! And he can X! And he can Y! And he can Z!"

I've never been a fan. I've tried Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, etc., but I really just don't like the common mechanic of balancing roles between members of a large party. Western RPG's are my crack, though. I want my avatar, my 3D, and my responsive real-time gameplay.

I used to love playing them, games like final fantasy, dragon quest, Xenosaga, Kingdom hearts etc. but after a while I felt like I was playing the same thing over and over.. the one thing that I really disliked was alot of those games you would get weapons and amor and never see a physical change of your character. where as western RPGs if you found a weapon or bad ass amor your character would reflect that..Making your character unique to you and not the same anime sailor moon look alike..

Edited by nao: 9/12/2013 9:45:00 PMI tend to like them, but then again I lived in Japan for 4 years so I may be biased. Like most genres though when they're good they're good. When they're bad they're bad. Most recent one I've played is probably Persona 4 Golden. Amazing game, and it essentially was an anime (had its own anime show). Haven't had as much opportunity to play JRPGs on the 360, but I'm sure I'll see some good ones on the PS4 this gen.

I dislike most JRPG's most of them are turn based combat which I hate! But the ones that tell detailed stories are always very complex and decent, I loved the phantasy star universe demo more then most RPG's I've played, western RPGs seem to hit what I go for though.

i like them.

Well, Fire Emblem: Awakening was an amazing game, and undeniably my favourite game this year so far.

I like some. Ni No Kuni and Rainbow Moon are some of my favorite newer ones.

I used to play them a lot more when I had a PS2 at university years ago: Final Fantasy series was awesome. I only bought an Xbox last gen which wasn't famous for its JRPGs, apart from maybe Lost Odyssey. That's why if I buy any console this gen, it would be a PS4.
