What I don't understand is people's inability to see value in things that aren't their favorite. It's true in all aspects of technology (see: iPhone/Android debate), but gaming fans are the worst.
The incremental differences in abilities are inevitable. There are things that the PS4 will be better at. There are things that the XB1 will do better. The question is why does a slight lead in anything imply that the other machine is somehow not just mildly inferior in a category, but utterly terrible? Doesn't anyone else hear Ricky Bobby in these debates? You do realize that's a joke, right?
The nice thing is that there are two really good choices. Neither machine has a significant leg up on the other. The only real issue is that because the choice is not so clear cut, we will all likely see our friends lists splinter. That's the only negative I see.

Yeah I'm not a fan of the "my dad can beat up your dad" arguments either. I think people like to think of a company's, sports team's, tv shows, and whatever else's accomplishments as their own so they like to talk up what they like and talk down what they don't. They talk about Sony and Microsoft like they're best friends with them or something instead of realizing that they are both just companies that want your money.
