Bungie have said that they want to make Destiny last for ten years. As the game ages they want it to evolve. Whether this is by simply done by giving everyone access to a new planet every year, new story beats, or meaningful gameplay is up to them. How would you and I do it though? Personally I would do what Peter Molyneux couldn't, plant a tree.
What if there was a sapling in the middle of the city? You don't pay it much attention to it, would would you? It's just more foliage. You then decided to go to Venus for a camping trip for a few months. You know, to find the inner you. To come to terms with all the lives you've taken under the pretense of saving humanity. You have a moment of crisis. Humanity is all but gone. It's no more than a sick baby suckling on the traveler's teat trying desperately to survive. You decide to come back the last city. To see whether or not it's worth fighting for. It's full of scum. People just walking by, paying the same attention to you as they would a rock in the road. Those who do see you only want to sell you a used gun which they no doubt pulled out of the fingers of a dying warrior. Human, non-human it doesn't matter to them. Then you see this sapling in the middle of the square. It's grown. Not by much, maybe a few inches, but it has grown. It instills a sense of hope. Humanity is worth saving. You grab some supplies, and before you know it you riding across the desert looking for some poor souls to save.
As you fight you become stronger. Make new friends, discover secrets that were best left unknown, and become a legend. As you grow so does the tree, until you fulfill your destiny. The journey is over. You reminisce about all the good times the jokes, the games, the money you lost playing cards. And the times you were so close to death you were counting down to your last breath. After all those years of adventuring, there is one memory that keeps floating about in your head. The moment you stopped being just a Guardian, and started your journey towards legend. You go back to the last city. The streets are crowded. Many eyes watching your every step. You walk up to that sapling that gave you hope. It's now a -blam!-ing pear tree! How sick would that be!
