Sci-fi author Karen Traviss to write an episode of My Little Pony
[quote]Attention all bronies and pegasisters, Equestria Daily has just received an exclusive announcement from the Hub regarding the inclusion of New York Times bestselling author, Karen Traviss, into the herd of My Little Pony writers, if only for one episode. We sent Ms. Traviss a few questions and she answered back, here is what she wrote.
ED: Why did you decide to write an episode for My Little Pony? Seems a bit out of your territory.
Karen Traviss: I usually tend to write for more mature audiences, most recently the Halo franchise, but I've heard a bit about My Little Pony and have seen that it is quite the phenomenon. Besides, I'm always looking to branch out and dabble in different age groups and audiences. From what I hear, this generation of My Little Pony isn't as girly as vapid as past generations, so it will be interesting to work with.
ED: Can you give us a look into what kind of topics your episode will cover?
KT: While my preferred style of writing involves steering away from the franchise so that I may be unbiased in my presentation, I relented and watched the first episode of the show to familiarize myself with the world. From what I saw, I decided to create an "outsider-looking-in" type of episode. I've introduced a new pony character from a far off land who comes into Equestria and doesn't like what she initially sees. The message is one of "Things may not be as they appear, so be careful."
Two characters I'm really interested in working with are the ponies named Pinkie Pie and Fluttershy. The tone of the land of Equestria reminds me a lot of Stalinist Russia, what with Princess Celestia casting her other royal sister to the moon since she didn't mesh with the system in place and all. There is some psychological underpinnings I'd love to delve into with these two characters. Perhaps Pinkie Pie is hyperactive to keep her mind off living in a less-than-nice regime? Perhaps Fluttershy remains secluded to keep from getting attached to others who can quickly vanish in a corrupt regime? It's for all of you to decide, but my new character will definitely bring this question forward.
After all, I think little girls can handle a more realistic look at the world rather than a perfectly fine and happy wonderland. This series really can mature and I'm happy to help it along.
