From the vidoc we saw that there will clearly be abilities in it. It might not be all of them, but we know some are in there. How do you guys feel about this?
Personally, I'm not worried about the gunplay bungie will bring into the game. I'm worried about the game not being balanced properly if I wanted to play "competitive" multiplayer. Sure, casual gaming is great from time to time, but there are times I just want all the unbalanced crap out so I can play a somewhat competitive match. Opinions?

I'm quite worried about balancing the classes. Right now, from the information we have, it would seem Hunter is OP. But, this is Bungie, they're testing and tweaking stuff daily, and after the beta they'll see what's really OP, and how to balance out the game better. I'm curious as to how we'll use our abilities, are they on a cool down? Do we have to pick up something from the map to use it? In Halo, all the abilities were things to use on the defensive. That could be used aggressively, in the right setting/situation. Sprinting for running away, Armor lock for blocking that death blow, camo for hiding, hologram to fool your opponent, Jetpack to get away. In Destiny, these abilities, or atleast some of them are 100% for killing people. Golden gun, Super smash, Nova Bomb. If those are on a 30 second reset counter, that's going to be bullshit. Oh, I can become god-like every 30 seconds, or everytime I die, because my ability resets? I can one shot because I chose this class. I hope that's not the case. I hope there is something more to abilities, I don't want to kill a Warlock, knowing everytime he comes back he can just Nova Bomb me. Just like we have to control the map for power weapons, or power ammo, we should have to do the same for special abilities. OR at least, make it like killstreaks. Get X amount of points before you can use your special. I just hope Bungie knows what they're doing with balancing. It's the one thing I'm concerned about.

Let's not forget bungie may lower the OP'ness of some abilities like nova bomb

If it's anything like Halo, there will be some kind of competitive playlist for us competitive types. I'm really hoping for an arena throwback with equal weapon starts and weapons around the map, but it's probably a pipe dream.

Destiny is a game built upon these features, so it can work.

Idk so far the Hunters special seems pretty overpowered from the only pvp we've seen

Edited by Silent Guardian: 12/2/2013 8:49:45 PMI think there is going to be a limit to how many times you use the abilities. Like some sort of energy, or limited number of uses (think Dark Souls). Other than that the abilities are balanced by the fact they fit specific roles and styles, and are all equally powerful in their own right.

It can definitely work if they do it properly.

adding more elements to the gameplay often helps balance it out, my hope is that all abilities will serve a nearly equal purpose other than dropshield, most of the armor abilities were pretty equal in Reach the question is whether or not the abilities that do damage all serve an equal purpose Titans vs Warlocks and Hunters (multiplayer playlist) would be cool

I prefer games where you have to think about how you spec your characters abilities. I find it much more competitive.

Edited by brandorobot: 8/22/2013 6:01:56 PMAs long as the abilities are balanced there's no reason it can't be competitive. Games like LoL are competitive and there's a huge range of characters and abilities to choose from. Using the abilities should take a fair amount of skill, cooldowns are obviously a must.

First off I wouldn't worry too much about the vidoc and the space magic. The one central theme Bungie has been keeping on topic is that Destiny is all about the individual taste. So I believe Reach Players will find space magic ability PVP matches and Balance H3 players will find balanced matches as well. But change is coming to how that happens. So best simply prepare for it and one day at a time on the information falling the gaps.
