Would Community Service be good for High Schoolers?

Do you think Community Service would be a good requirement for High Schoolers to need so they can graduate High School? The benefits of at least 10 hours of service per student in every city in every state could make a dramatic difference in a lot of places. It's already known that some students willingly do Community Service to make their records look better to Colleges, but what if every student that was going to graduate had to do at least 10 hours? Imagine the benefits if it could be raised to 20? Schools could ask nearby businesses and corporations if their students would be allowed to maintain their grounds or clean up nearby areas and get funding for it from them, then still have some left over for maintaining the schools themselves after they have given the students what they need to perform their tasks. Not to mention the responsibility and honest hard labor that would be taught to each for doing the work. Do you think this is a good idea?

If there could be some kind of obligatory class you had to take where they would go do community projects, I wouldn't have a problem with it, but I don't think that kids should be forced to do it on their own. This is coming from someone who has done 100+ hours of community service. It does look good on college applications, but forcing kids to do community service doesn't do much good for the application people, because they're trying to find the kids who take the initiative, not do what they're told.
