Should parents start doing their jobs nowadays?

Because, from what I've seen, if they are doing their job, they're doing a piss-poor job at it. I remember as a child, if I was disrespectful to any adult or anyone older than me, my dad would spank me or my mom pinched my ears and made me do more chores by hand once we got home. I hated it. Yet, even though it made me resent my parents, it taught me to respect my elders. Why am I asking this? I was at the college in this town and a mother was with her 8 year old son. I was pretty much just relaxing with my friends, but I kept hearing the sound of someone screaming. It was the 8 year old boy and he was throwing a tantrum in public. Rather than pulling her son away to tell him not to do it, the woman pulled out her iPhone and gave it to her son, which he promptly threw on the ground and continued complaining. You can guess that many people were watching. Now, when I did something like that, which I did often, my mom often pulled me to the side where no one would see and gave me an ultimatum: Keep doing that and do extra chores for the whole week, no video games or fun time, or to shut up. I always chose the latter. I've seen some other instances in my life where parents were pretty much relying on their phone to keep their kid quiet in public. Hell, I didn't even get my own cell phone until I was in 10th grade and I got it just before I got my dad's old car since he was retiring. Why are parents relying on technology to raise their child? There's never a good substitute for a good parent. Parents nowadays lack backbone. They're being bossed around by their own kids and aren't even getting the respect they deserve. Why are parents spoiling their kids to be brats and ask why they're being like that? Parents should do their job correctly, and then they won't ask why their kids are disrespectful.

  • Obviously that's a large generalization, so it doesn't hold much merit. Yes, some children are unruly, but that's how it's always been. I do, however, have one point in your post i'd like to respond to separately. The whole "respect your elders" deal. Listen, if you wish to disagree with what i'm about to say, by all means you're free to, but I just have a little bit to say on that. The main jist of it? You don't have to respect everyone strictly because they're older than you. It's usually expected that the more you age the wiser you get, but that doesn't apply to everyone. Hell, some older folk can be just as stupid as the generation raised beneath them, or just flat out awful people. I give respect based on the individual at hand. If you're an asshole, I don't give a shit how many years you've been living on this rock, i'm not going to bother showing you respect. Of course, I figure most people have this attitude by a certain age, so I probably just rambled without purpose...oh well, keeps me busy. :)
