Girl, 14, Commits Suicide Over Ask.fm Cyber Bullying

I just saw this on the news and whoa. I honestly can't believe what I am seeing. I am literally face palming. A 14 year old girl committed suicide over bullying on her Ask.fm page. For those of you that don't know, Ask.fm is a page where you register to have have people ask you questions. Basically attention whore central. The users that ask questions are almost always anonymous, so as you can imagine, the level of random spam questions and even borderline creepy and stalkerish is abundant. You don't even need an account to post. So as you can imagine, the amount of reports must be through the roof, and honestly, I don't see the moderators doing anything about it because that's just how the page is ad has always been. It's like having a mental breakdown after going to much on chatroulette and seeing too many dicks. Why do you keep going there then? I understand she's 14, but c'mon. So, what I can't believe is that if this girl has insecurities, AND was getting bullied on this page, why wouldn't she just close it down or delete it? Why don't tell her parents who would have done something about it? Why just start posting those damn pictures of written things searching for attention? I feel bad for the family and all for their loss, but seriously, call me cold or whatever, but I have no sympathy for the girl herself. It's just a huge facepalm. It's like standing in the middle of a bulls eye, knowing what's coming, but too lazy to do anything about it. She literally got trolled to death. If it were on facebook or Twitter or whatever, okay, some room for understanding. But suicide over Ask.fm? Seriously? I just... complete face palm. I not too sure how it'll work, but I highly doubt the Police will get very far in their investigation. All this does is going to give more people more reasons to moderate the internet and take anything you say as a potential serious threat and get in trouble for it here in England. What are your thoughts on this?

What drives someone to suicide isn't simple... You feel like all the paths have been closed and in your head - you are alone, you don't have any other options and you see suicide as the only answer to your problems. Perhaps she had more issues, some that she didn't feel to confess with anyone due to them being personal and thanks to the anonymity the internet brings she felt comfortable to an extent. This isn't suicide over last.fm, this is suicide due to societal and personal reasons that need to be investigated - but shouldn't, the family and only select people should snoop around this matter, since it is really personal. At the end of the day, she's merely a statistic, the trolls who caused that, probably are careless and are roaming the wastelands of the internet seeking more people to affect with their sociopath nature. Sleep well, whoever you were, because my heart is broken due to these events; The internet is supposed to be a place of knowledge, access to limitless communication, entertrainement and information... Not a path to your end, in a cold webpage where heartless people who do not realize what they are doing might have repecursions in the real world, who do not realize their doing because they are taken by their own misery and are more than happy to shed it onto others. RIP Hannah, I am honestly tearing right now, how cruel eventuality and the finality of life is.

I think 14 if far too young for a child to be on the internet. Kids at that age are not socially or emotionally secure enough to properly handle unrestricted interactions.

          • A lot of the times the people who go on these sites are trying to fill a void they feel is missing in their life. Also they might feel like the people harnessing them can't be stopped. All in all, what we should take from this is that we should treat people kinder.

              • If the father is going to blame his 14 year old daughter's suicide on online activity, then he can only blame himself for not monitoring her online behavior. BTW, it looks like she was a little chubby kid who probably had bigger issues than what was happening on her ask.fm account.

              • I saw this, the headline was "Trolled to Death" which seemed almost jocular and light hearted. Obviously I feel bad for the family and wonder if society is really going to shit if a young girl feels the need to commit suicide over comments being made about her. That being said, I 100% agree with you OP. Sites like Ask.fm an formspring are essentially made as a conduit for anonymous abuse, and if the girl had simply shut down her account she would have severed communications with a large number of those who insulted her, leaving her under a little less stress. By going on the Internet an having an ask.fm account you are immediately placing yourself in the firing line for trolls. If you can handle that then DON'T HAVE THE BLOODY ACCOUNT. The media will be all over it saying how awful some people are (which they are) but conveniently avoid the greater issue at hand; the increasing number of teenage girls with an often unjustifiable preoccupation with self harm. I still go to school in the UK, I live in a very pleasant area, but still there are plenty of girls who have self harmed or have eating disorders and from my point of view it's more because there seems to be a "problem culture" where people fin it cool and edgy to have something wrong with them. That's the key issue here, not anonymous online offenders.

Didn't read. I'm probably going to get called a few things for this but honestly...
What are your thoughts on this?
No -blam!-s given whatsoever. I don't take cyber bullying seriously in the least bit. You know why?
'Cause it's on the -blam!-ing internet. That's why.
It's too damn easy to just stop going to the site, block a person, change accounts or simply make yourself more anonymous (i.e. quit posting pictures of yourself and handing out information like candy on Halloween). And before someone accuses me of being insensitive, or says something like "it's easy for you to say all that 'cause you've never experienced it." well you can stop right there. I have been harassed (I'm not going to say "bullied" 'cause that just sounds dumb) both online and irl. I got over it. If a depressed person like me with zero confidence in myself can get over it, so can others, especially if said harassment is only online. I could go on, but there really is no need to. I'm also going to mention that I understand that the site itself isn't necessarily what made her commit suicide. She most likely had some crap going on in her life that was hard for her to handle and used the internet as a means of dealing with it, not knowing that the internet would just make things worse. I can assume this because that's how I was (and still am to a certain extent). I'm not going to go into detail as to why I'm depressed, but I used things like xbl and the internet to sort of escape reality. Unfortunately as I said that just makes you feel worse do to the kind of people on the internet. If you're already feeling blue, going online to escape and instead getting bashed whether because of your appearance, the sound of your voice, the way you play a video game, your sexual preference, your religion etc. isn't going to make you feel any better, so I understand what she most likely went through. However, that doesn't mean there aren't other options. For one, you can get off your computer all together and find a hobby that you enjoy and use that hobby as a means of escaping reality instead of the internet.

This is not cyber bullyings fault, it is the fault of terrible parenting.

                        • Yup, stupid reason to kill yourself. People just don't understand either what something like this would do to your family(most of the time). Hard to believe she'd do that over something so pointless. Well, just another day in the world.

                        • Tragic, though the above is how people should deal with being offended or easily taking offense on the internet. Honestly, just deal with it. It's the damn internet. I'd be more understanding if it was facebook bullying or some crap by people she knew.
