Set in a near future world, Ace Combat: Infinity will offer a brand new story campaign, set in the real world (instead of Strangereal) like Ace Combat: Assault Horizon. However, Infinity is boasting more fictitious elements as seen in Ace Combat's Strangereal world. It seems everything we love about Strangereal is going to be placed in a real world setting. There will also be a co-op multiplayer mode where skilled aces will form two teams and compete to inflict the most damage on a common enemy.
As seen in the trailer, the Stonehenge Turret Network is returning from Ace Combat 4, a system of rail guns designed to eliminate asteroid fragments in atmosphere. Flying fortresses similar to the Aigaion in Ace Combat 6 and the XB-0 Hresvelgr in Ace Combat: Zero are seen. Fictitious planes such as the Shinden II and the Nosferatu are confirmed. And more importantly, an asteroid has impacted the earth (seen in this teaser). This is an allusion to the Ulysses asteroid, which struck Ace Combat's fictitious world of Strangereal, and is a major part of the lore.
NOTE: This game will be Free to Play as a Playstation 3 exclusive.
Set to release later in 2013 on Playstation Network.
So, can Project Aces redeem themselves after the tragedy of an Ace Combat game that was Assault Horizon? Adding elements from Strangereal into the real world may bring back the spark that was missing from Assault Horizon. Or this could just be a small side project, a last hurrah for the Playstation community, which Ace Combat has been exclusive to for quite some time until the later games went multiplatform.
tl;dr
New Ace Combat is set in the real world but has elements of previous titles.
