Are science and religion compatible?
Personally, I find the idea of simultaneous support for both religion and science wholly incompatible. Here's my thought process:
- Scientists support the [url=http://www.sciencebuddies.org/science-fair-projects/overview_scientific_method2.gif]scientific method[/url].
- Faith-based religion conflicts with the scientific method, as religion skips/ignores steps in the scientific method.
- One cannot support the scientific method while simultaneously supporting faith-based religion.
One cannot truly support both science and religion; you're compromising your support in one or the other.
Thoughts? Explain your position.

8 RepliesThey both are one and the same. The issue is that people fail to realize that religion is a part of the experiment called life. We have the ability to question everything even what we can't see and there is a ton the scientific method can prove but then again it also can't disprove a ton either. I have made more sense about God when I think in terms of "God the Scientist" than "God the all powerful deity" and I'm extremely spiritual not necessarily religious. Faith is a tool in this experiment not a falsehood to be dismissed because it doesn't fit our "scientific method". The universe is way bigger than our tiny minds can comprehend but we will get there with a little time and....faith.

I've come across scientists with religious beliefs, they say they believe god does things but use science to explain how god did such things, not my personal belief but thought I throw it out there

I thought faith and proof were opposites. I don't have faith my light is on, I'm looking right at it. I have faith that the math test will be canceled. Once the teacher sends the notice, its no longer faith, its knowledge. Religion, more importantly belief in God, is belief without evidence. Science tests hypothesis, but doesn't believe them until anyone can repeat the experiment with the same results. So, science says I call the teacher and ask if the math test is off, and then ask a friend to call to confirm. The faithful person would just believe without the call. So, the two are in fact, opposites.

10 RepliesI personally consider science as a type of religion. It does the exact same thing as Islam and Christianity and explains the things around us. Except it injects a little bit of morals and ethics into the mix, this is where I lose my patience with many religions. If the world worked on cold stone logic then things would be so much better. I don't mean we need to divorce ourselves form our emotions just think openly about everything. Any why most of science is based around theories and presumptions in the whole. I can't accept it as fact until all the pieces of the puzzle fit together.

The only spirituality that could go hand in hand with science is Wicca. The link provided is a good example of why it could.

The traditional values and practices of religion are not compatible. however the "new-age" movement of spirituality is very compatible, I think.

Seeing as the word Religion doesnt necessarily encompass a Christian's definition of theism, OP's question is flawed. Religion as a whole? Sure. I dont see how Buddhism and Science conflict.

Most things that science have proven 100% correct don't conflict with religion, but that depends on the religion I suppose.

27 RepliesNo. Science is founded on skepticism and empirical proof. Religion on faith. While people try to straddle the two, in the end, you either believe that you are going to heaven, or know that you are turning off.

When a religious belief is proven false (read: Galileo!) words like 'heretic' get thrown around. When a religious belief is proven true; well damn, I'd love this water to be wine.
