I know what everyone is thinking here. Most of you are a little apprehensive because of the title, and a select few have already drawn their blades and are ready to defend their sacred Halo 4. So just as a disclaimer, keep in mind that I love Halo. I enjoy the lore, and Halo 4 isn't a bad game.
To begin, I'll summarize what I got out of Halo 4. I'm going to try and keep this as unbiased as possible, so bear with me.
Campaign - Action packed and short. 6-8 hours depending on gameplay preference and difficulty. New vehicles, some old favorites are gone. The return of the Chief. Not much replayability other than for achievements and the sole experience.
Multiplayer - Competitive. Fast paced with the largest selection of weapons to date. New armor abilities and perks. Ordinance drops. A loadout shooter with arena shooter qualities.
Other - Forge, Theater, Spartan Ops, Custom Games, and File Share are all a step down from their predecessors. None are completely useless though.
Overall - Not terrible. All the qualities of the game come together to craft a unique and identifiable experience.
If you've seen me on the forums before, you know I prefer Reach over 4. But, I do enjoy both.
Now on to why I prefer a game released 20 years ago with some mods over one released 8 months ago.
Here is what I got out of Doom 2 with the Brutal Doom mod.
Campaign - Action packed and your first play will probably last you a good 8-10 hours if you are new to Doom. Yes, you heard correct. That's longer than Halo 4. The learning curve of Doom 2 is probably around 2 hours. I think there are 6 total difficulties. Not a tough game to get the hang of. Co-op is also available online.
A ton of replayability here. The game is structured around collecting various key cards. You typically only need two to advance to the next level, but going back for the third will reward your bravery with powerful weapons and ammo. Not bad for $10 and it's not like you need a powerful rig to run it.
Every ounce of this game is free past the initial ten dollars.
Multiplayer - Yes. Multiplayer on a game 20 years old. This is also completely free. The only catch is that you need Zandronum or GZDoom to run it, but both are completely free and are frequently updated.
A classic arena shooter. I'm not going to pretend for a second that the sandbox is balanced, but it is fun as hell and is very fast paced. There is even a large community that still play and you'll find a game with ease if you set everything up correctly. Using Zandronum will allow you to play on servers with the same mods you have.
Game Customization - id Software released all of the source code for the game, and the modding community is still churning out new material. You can also create your own mods and levels very easily. Also completely free. No microtransactions here, folks.
Brutal Doom - This is the mod I posted a video of above. It is fantastic and gives the game better graphics, sound effects, friendly AI, and countless other improvements to the game. It makes the shooting feel great and is a must have for anyone who owns the game. %100 free as well. It sacrifices nothing of vanilla Doom 2.
The mod is currently at it's 19th iteration and is still being updated by SGtMarkIV on Youtube.
Overall - Perfection. With Brutal Doom, not a single part of this game is bad. When is the last time you could say that about a game? The only thing that you might not like are the old pseudo-3d graphics, but they are very smooth. The gameplay doesn't call for next gen graphics, and doesn't need them.
End Summary: If you haven't played Doom 2 with Brutal Doom, I am challenging you to go and do it. What were you going to spend your ten bucks on? The Champions Bundle?
Burrrrnnnnnnn.
I guarantee that if you accept this challenge, you will agree with me. Or at the very least, enjoy the game. And in a generation of games with day one DLC and publishers nickel and diming us, an enjoyable game is really what we need.
