Well then what makes a religion?

Is it faith? Is it the belief in God(s)? Is it a belief and ideology set by a person, that is believed by a few? What in your eyes, makes a religion? No definition pasters please, but if you do...I will most likely whine like a bitch and threaten to mute! Ill do it!
yea...I won't do it ;)
Fundamentals. Science and atheism cannot be religions because they are ever-changing, based on whatever is the most logical, well-supported theory at the time. Fundamentals are permanent, unchanging notions and rules.

    • "When one person suffers from a delusion, it is called insanity. When many people suffer from a delusion, it is called religion." I don't recall who wrote that but it's my definition. Religion is just a unique brand of mass hysteria coupled with indoctrination at a young age before people can think for themselves.

Any core spiritual belief shared by a group of people can be classified as a religion. So believing in a single god likely means a person is either Jewish, Muslim, or Christian. If this person then believes in the story of Jesus then that person is nearly guaranteed to be Christian. So for me, religion is a gathering of similar beliefs, and in this example of course it's a major shared belief, but it could be a small group to. Incidentally believing there might be a spiritual connection to life, but no concrete beliefs makes a person agnostic. A lack of any spiritual makes a person Atheist (as shown by the word itself A-without and theist- theism - spirituality). So that means an Atheist can still believe ideology, have faith in people, etc. he or she just don't believe in a supernatural power or spiritual connection. By contrast an agnostic believes there to be something supernatural to life, but hasn't found a definition that suits him or her. Things get more interesting for me when asking what the difference is between a religious belief (group of people believing the same core ideas) and a cult? Perhaps extreme beliefs, but then what about organizations like Westboro Baptist Church? This church is technically Christian-Baptist but even other Baptists say they are to extreme and don't support their actions. So it this a religious belief or just a cult based on a religion? Edit: Sorry bored at work lol

I've got a bachelor of arts in religion, and I still don't know the answer to this question. There are, of course, a few dictionary definitions, but they're so vague that they're pretty useless. The majority of the classes I took to earn that degree started with a conversation along the lines of, "There isn't really one good, definite definition of religion, but for this class we'll say it's __________." We picked a definition that fit the class, but really only included a small subset of religions that we were studying at that time.

I believe it is traditionally a geographical term referring to an area, often a somewhat broad area connected by a similar culture. Such as the region of Scandinavia, or the region of the southeastern united States, etc. Edit...or you said religion, not region, and I can't read.

        • If 1000 people believe a super natural being answers their prays, they're 'religious'. If one man believes a super natural being tries to communicate with him by tapping morse code on the window with rain drops, he is 'mentally ill'.

        • Not really an answer but cults often have the same beliefs with regard to there being a higher power and a certain set of actions that you should carry out but I believe they are classified differently.
