I want to get into competitive Halo...

The title says it all. I'll let you know where I'm at right now. So, I've been playing Halo since 2007 or 2008. Halo 2 was the one I played first. I never owned it, because everyday I would go to my friend's house to play with him. I was 10 or 11, so this didn't bother me. We continually played Halo 2 until 2009 (?) because we were 10 and had no idea there was a sequel coming out. By the time we got Halo 3, my friend and I were starting to grow apart. I would still go over every couple of days, but it wasn't the same... In turn, I didn't play Halo 3 as much and that's probably why I never really enjoyed it as much as Halo 2. So, as I was growing up, I heard about Halo Reach. I figured this was the perfect time to get and Xbox. So I eventually bought my own Xbox 360, which came with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. I played this game, and I was hooked. I lived this game. I was addicting for a good year and a half. Halo: Reach didn't even cross my mind. My friend, Brett (?) lent me the game. I had to say, Halo had changed. With the introduction of armor abilities (especially sprint) I felt like the game had really stepped up. I actually really enjoyed Reach, far more than 3. But it was weird. I hadn't played Halo in a good 2 years, and I was still going the top of the leader boards, almost every game. Why? Was I selected to be good at this game? Was there something about my strategy that was really good? I doubted it. So I started to look into Competitive Halo. Because I loved Halo since I've been playing it, and I really wanted to play this game in tournaments. I also thought I could make some new Halo friends, because all my friends didn't like Halo that much. So as I'm looking into MLG, I realized I'm really not that good at all. But I could be so much better. So I suppose my question is, what's the proper course of action to get into competitive? Which games should I be playing to improve my skills? Halo 3? Reach? Halo 4? Also, what game modes? What settings? Controller layout (I currently use Bumper Jumper, on a 3 sensitivity). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Oh lordy you're in the wrong era my friend. I'll tell you this right now, don't even bother, don't try, don't think about it, just, go. The "competitive" parts of Halo are faded, dying, and in all chances, never coming back. If you were around for Halo in it's prime and even its aging, twilight years, then you could consider it. But now? There's nothing. The best place I could say would be Halo 3, but the game itself doesn't have much life left, and the only ones left are the religious fanatical breed of people, which means you'll get your ass stomped on. Repeatedly. And trust me, I've tried going up against the religious sect of players who will never leave the game until it's shut down. And it's not fun. Really, the best course of action is to go elsewhere. There's nothing for you in it, and it'll be a waste of time.
