I agree it's worthy of respect. To a certain degree. If I see someone hit an insane weight in the gym I'll have a good deal of admiration toward them, but people make it out to be so much harder than it is. Again, that doesn't mean it isn't hard. It requires effort and dedication. But not to the extent inferred from the Socrates quote.
I do care about fitness. A lot. I thought you knew this. But tbh, running marathons is harder than simply having aesthetic appeal. A lot of bodybuilders are nowhere near as fit as they look.
