There's been a lot of buzz going around lately about the role of Mary Jane Watson in the Amazing Spider-Man sequels. But Andrew Garfield recently pitched his own unique idea for the character: What if MJ was a guy?
While speaking with EW.com, the actor said he recently had a conversation with producer Matt Tolmach about Mary Jane and what he'd like to see. "I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ," Garfield said. "And I was like, 'What if MJ is a dude?' Why can't we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It's hardly even groundbreaking! So why can't he be gay? Why can't he be into boys?"
Garfield even knows who he'd want to play the part. "I've been obsessed with Michael B. Jordan since The Wire. He's so charismatic and talented. It'd be even better -- we'd have interracial bisexuality!"
Later, EW mentioned Garfield's idea to director Marc Webb, who said, "Michael B. Jordan, I know." When asked if he'd already heard the pitch, Webb replied, "Uh, are you kidding?"
You know, it's funny; obviously a lot of comic book and Spiderman fans are kicking up a big stink over this, but people's biggest problem seems to be changing Spiderman's sexuiality. Sure, I would find it upsetting myself considering that's not the Spiderman I've known for the majority of my life, but like Andrew said "Why can't he be into boys too?". I don't have a issue with gay superheros nor if they wanted to explore the sexuiality of a already known one. My biggest beef with it all is that they want to change a already known character (Mary Jane) and change them into someone else entirely. If you're going to make Spiderman gay or bi-sexual, make a NEW character or use a already existing male character. Don't take a character people have known for YEARS and have been quite famous in the Marvel Universe, and make them a whole different character with a whole new sex. It's just a slap to the face for the fans of that character, and to Spiderman fans themselves.
I highly doubt this will actually happen, but I just wanted to see what you guys think of it all.

This is just a sad attempt to make the Spider Man Musical canon.

What a huge FUKING load of horse shit! I've never been this butt hurt this fast. Damn I don't watch hero movies to watch people explore their sexuality. I understand rebooting a character but this is over the top. Fuk u Garfield

Hipster much?

I hate these attempts at making super heroes politically correct. They are ruining the heroes that we know and love and are devastating countless childhoods. I hate it :(

Edited by Elrond Hubbard: 9/18/2013 10:23:19 PMI remember just a short while ago when:
OMG UBISOFT IS RUINING SAM FISHER YOU CAN'T JUST GIVE HIM A NEW VOICE ACTOR YOU'RE CHANGING THE CHARACTER, JUST MAKE A NEW CHARACTER INSTEAD
Despite the fact that Sam Fisher has always changed in every Splinter Cell game. And then:
OMG BLACKLIST = BEST THING SINCE CHAOS THEORY
Heck, even before that:
OMG JJ ABRAMS IS RUINING STAR TREK YOU CAN'T JUST HAVE KIDS DO THIS SHIT
Changed to:
Well, this actually ranks as one of the best Star Trek movies ever.
Everyone should stop being such pussies about this. If you really don't like the idea of a gay Spiderman, you can express an opinion without acting gayer than gay people about it.

Edited by Swim Good: 9/18/2013 8:22:49 PMThey should have Spidey date the real MJ for a plot twist that no-one would see coming.

They'd have to have Tobey McGuire act in the movies again. We all know Toby likes the D.

Edited by Cultmeister: 9/18/2013 9:55:13 PMAndrew Garfield in a Spider-Man costume making out with another dude on-screen? Did I die and go to heaven? Cos today has turned out -blam!-ing AMAZING!!

I don't like changing characters for the sake of change. Spider-man is an established character with relatively few characters that take up the title besides Peter Parker. Peter's not gay, and I think it only trivialize the gay community to make him that way. Like we can't have successful gay superheroes without making an icon gay. Which is utterly untrue. Batwoman, for instance, is completely kickass while being written as a solid character that happens to be a lesbian. The difference between her and Spider-man is that Spidey being gay would be a statement for all the wrong reasons. It would be a statement entirety about homosexuality which is not what Spidey or Peter has ever represented. Batwoman doesn't even entirely represent homosexuality, which is a good thing. I'm personally tired of people exaggerating homosexuality to the point where they entirely defeat the purpose of bringing it up. To make us seem as normal as everyone else. Make a superhero gay on their own names, and make their sexuality a facet of their character rather than the focus. Otherwise, I don't think you're respecting the topic.

Mary Jane not Larry Jane

>July >cOLD thread >seriously guys?
-
It would flop harder than a twink on x.
-
Ugh. Don't change superheros into some stupid political weapon god damn it. We get it. Accept gays. But if you want to go ahead and ruin Spider-Man I'd understand why Putin is jailing them all. MAKE YOUR OWN GAY SUPER HERO IF YOU WANT ONE TO BE GAY SO DAMN BAD!
-
So you're ok with them changing an established character, but not ok with them changing another established character? hmm.. that doesn't make sense. As capiton said below, if you want a gay superhero why not just create a new superhero instead trying to change one thats been around for 60 years?
-
Edited by Gatsby: 9/18/2013 8:09:30 PMI have no problem with gays but in the comics she's female so lets stick to canon. What next dance his enemies to death?
-
I don't have a problem with gays. But I have a problem with this. Garfield, you disappoint me.
-
*facepalm
-
My God, this place has changed.
-
Classic Spidey
-
Yeah its kind of confusing though i wonder should they not just make a new super hero to be like that. If you want a gay superhero then make a new superhero.
-
This also seems a little on the preachy side, but not as much as that one Macklemore song.
-
Extrano is still the best LGBT Superhero
