This is absolutely insane. 262 MPG.
So far Volkswagen has only made 50 of them, and VW (as of right now) only plans to make to make 250 of them.
The average top speed is 142 KMH (around 88 MPH).
EDIT: This is the last paragraph of an article on this car from Car and Driver Magazine.
For now, all the XL1 does is make a statement—it’s still a prototype. But VW Group chairman Martin Winterkorn promised it will be available by 2013 “at an affordable price.” We guess that will be somewhere around the equivalent of $50,000. Qatar won’t get it—and the U.S. probably won’t, either—but this is just the thing European eco-warriors have been waiting for.
Assuming Volkswagen makes more than 250 (if everything goes well), then even if these don't come to the US, and so long as the US doesn't ban them (which there really isn't a reason to ban them), then if you have the money, you could just import one. If the ***rumored*** price is around $50,000, sure it's pricey, but not too much more than a BMW (for example), so it is still affordable.
