I'm curious if anyone on BNet is interested in STEM (science/technology/engineering/math) fields. Please share about STEM fields you're interested in, the work you're doing in them, interesting news, thoughts, questions, stories, etc. Feel free to explain a field that interests you or comment on STEM education ideas. It's okay to be broad or talk about various subjects, goals, ideas, etc.
I'll start:
Among many other things, I'm very interested in robotics engineering. I'm especially interested in Distributed Autonomous Robotic Systems– typically groups of autonomous robots that work together to achieve a task. I think that providing dynamic placement of multiple sensors allows for different perspectives and can increase the amount of data available to entire systems. For instance, a ground robot may be able to plan paths based on sensor data from an aerial robot. Using the same philosophy, items that wouldn't traditionally be considered robots (such as smartphones, street cameras, etc) could become sensor packages for robots. Networking sensors and robots is a really interesting goal to me.
What are you interested in?

I am a robotics engineer at a small robotics company in the Silicon Valley. We have developed a robotic system that does something similar to what your thinking. They are autonomous mobile robots that work together path planning, task distribution,..blah blah. Each robot is in charge of its own sensory data, sonar and Laser Range Finder, and shares it with the other robots over Wifi. Its a ton of fun to develop and play with these robots, but it is really tough to find real life applications. I would love to get involved with developing this kind of system in 3D space. Basically the map scanning robots in Prometheus are my dream. Gotta start somewhere.
