Today, I took an irregular route home from work today due to traffic and construction. The roads were busy, and while driving my attention was suddenly caught by what appeared to be colorful shreds of paper. But those papers weren't shredded pieces of colorful paper.
Somewhat long story short, I turned around, jumped out of my car and collected as many bills as I could see that were partly on the road and still on the grass. I was able to find an envelope that had cheques and some other bills in it as well. The envelope had a name but no address and the cheques also had names. I piled all the bills into a box I had in my trunk and then I called the police. I waited for a while, outside of my car near the road and after a few minutes a copper came by to help investigate. I turned the money over and went on my way after we'd found another few stray bills and added them to the pile. Not including the cheques which I didn't bother counting, there was close to $7000.00 in cash.
I've always wondered what I'd do if I found a large sum of money lying around... Whether or not I'd be tempted to keep it, or if I'd have the good conscience to turn it in. And while I always said and knew I would do the right thing, you never really know until you're put in the situation. Now I know. It was painful... but at least now I know.
So, what about you guys? Any similar stories?

One time i found 1250 euros in a bus. No joke. Shared it with my classmates because they were with me. Everybody got 100 euros...

I would have kept it. My cousin found a wallet with $400 in it and so she told the police. They claimed that if they couldn't find the owner after x amount of time, she would be given the money. Long story short, after x amount of time, the money "went missing" and she never got it.

I would have given it to a homeless person and told them to pay it forward.

Good on ya Helveck. Does Canada have a law that makes it yours after a certain amount of time?
-
Forgive my naivety, but what country are those bills from?
-
OP is obviously a schmuck for turning it in

Would of kept it. Cops are probably just gonna give it the government, unless there was something else along with it to track the money.

I've never been in that kind of situation before, but good on for you doing the right thing.

It's cool you turned it in. I imagine that if you were to lose a substantial sum of money, you'd want somebody to do the same for you. I once dropped $10 and a guy behind me picked it up and handed it back to me. It's really nice knowing there are good people in the world. On a more topic related note, I found a $25 gift card to where I work today lying on a shelf while I was stocking. I was tempted to keep it, but didn't want to ruin anybody's day who might still be looking for it, so I let a member of management who I knew WOULDN'T simply take the money for the store know and it turned out somebody had lost it yesterday so we gave her a call and she seemed happy. It'd be nice to keep stuff like that, but it's too hard knowing there's probably somebody who's rather upset looking for it.
-
Good on you.
-
Well done OP. I know i wouldn't of done the right thing
