The Sniper Gun does in fact shoot too far, and while this might not have been a problem in Halo, it most certainly will be a problem in Destiny if steps aren't taken to prevent the Sniper Rifle and other longer ranged weapons from completely dominating the sandbox.
I encourage the reader to join me on an speculative journey as we embark to figure out exactly how Destiny's sandbox might work compared to Halo.
Click to continue reading to the second post.

Edit: If you don't read the entire thread and instead skip to posting a silly response, I reserve the right to laugh at you.
You might want to edit this thread and point out how old it is now that it's been bumped. People don't read dates on this website.

Aren't all the pvp maps pretty small so far? The avenues for sniping would be limited? And if its pve I'd love to pick off a cabal foot soldier from a mile off, that'd be extremely satisfying.
-
Current snipers shoot accurately at 1.6 miles Your argument Is invalid

The answer is: tiger woods doesn't play basketball so he doesn't pull up from half court to shoot anything
-
Grand slam = baseball Tiger woods= golf Pull up from half court= basketball Guy who wrote this= moron

Edited by Quasisight: 7/14/2014 6:05:30 AMEdit2: How old is this thread wtf. I'm confused. Are we able to kill other players in PvE? If I am mistaken in this post, please correct me, for I too am just trying to discuss. Edit: I read the basis of this issue and disagreed based off my understanding of it. As such, I have not read the proposed solutions yet. If I understood you, it seems like you were saying that in a PvE environment, snipers would have a large advantage. By the time you can get close, they will kill you with superior range and damage. If this happening is even possible, I disagree. If this is referring to them dominating parts of PvP, I also disagree, because the maps are small; dominating long range would obviously make one suffer close range; if one switched out their sniper they would have no ammo in their new special (shotgun) and be forced to get new ammo, making themselves vulnerable. In a PvE environment, we always have access to our Sparrow, so if the sniper is not skilled, closing the gap would be simple. If the terrain isn't flat, you will have cover when approaching them. If the ground is flat and the sniper is skilled, finding another path would be better. Or get out your own sniper and kill them yourself; the damage differences wouldn't make a massive difference. If they do, the issue comes down to character level, not the sniper rifle. If they are preventing you from continuing for some reason, then let them camp and go elsewhere.

Solving this is semi-simple, and would require prototypes played by the community to properly fix it. If people say that it it too easy for snipers to kill other players, add a moderate amount of sway to the snipers at all times. If, after some play testing with the aim sway, snipers say it is way too hard to get head shots, let them hold their breath for a few seconds every once in a while in-game, and they can't hold their breath until a few after sprinting/running. You can only hold your breath while scoped. If players complain that they can't find snipers, make the muzzle flash bigger and (if that doesn't help) add a laser visible to everyone that can see it. If none of the above help too much, test them out while also using bullet drop. If even that doesn't work, I've got nothing.
-
I don't mind sniper rifles. But I do understand what your saying. But I feel most players would rather work together then against one another making it a very deadly and useful weapon. I feel like giving the sniper rifle a ton of range is not a problem at all as long as the sniper has some kind of recoil to it. You also need to consider how well it will fare in side buildings and corners. I think the many people at Bungie will make all the weapons balanced and enjoyable. Especially since you can level up weapons and give the unique capabilities.

Having read everything, I will have to agree bullet drop is a good option, and for realism's sake I think it should be implemented to a degree. However, it should be noted that the sniper in Halo was not the gun with the most range in Halo 3, and after a far enough distance, the bullet seemed to have disappeared. If my memory serves me correctly, and this could totally have been a myth, the spiker (Halo 3) actually had the greatest range where damage would occur. So my first guess is the same would be of Destiny if they used a similar model. Not that it makes the most sense. Second, I don't think PvP will be how you described. I don't even think friendly fire will exist in co-op anymore. I could be wrong. I have a feeling competitive gameplay will be very much similar to Halo in that you have default loadouts. And if that isn't the case, and you can carry over gear you earned in co-op into competitive, then I presume the "arenas" in which we fight will be strictly controlled, and less open than all of destiny. Of course thats all conjecture and doesn't solve the potential issue at hand. Hypothetical question, why can't sniper rifles be equipped with range finders and automatically compensate for bullet drop. It may even be possible for sniper rifles to be capable of tracking enemies in the scope and calculating their trajectory to find where to aim to compensate for movement and bullet travel time. Then, either the scope would put a reticule where to aim, or the scope would lie about where its pointing, and while you thought you were pointing at someones face, you were actually pointing 2 feet above, and half a foot to the right of his face. This would explain why, from the perspective of the sniper, why bullets don't drop and seem to arrive instantly, because the weapon did some of the guess work for you, which doesn't really require much skill as much as it does experience. So while I agree that bullet drop should exist, and bullet travel time should exist, I don't think it requires a lot of skill on the end of the player, or a type of skill that is very different than the skill required with the sniper rifle from Halo. And if Bungie does choose to make gameplay similar than it was in Halo (with regards to the sniper) I think they should have another option to fix the problem. Of course, Destiny isn't Halo, and if Bungie decides to have a different kind of gameplay (around the sniper) then thats their decision, but I am operating under the belief that the weapons will have a similar feel to those in Halo. Will there be gun sway? Because gun sway could provide the a solution. Lets hypothetically assume a Halo like game with gun sway. The gun sway might be negligible at medium-close range because the players are awesome (much like spartans are, and guardians are assumed to be). How would that affect weapons at long, or even extremely long range. In games such as CoD, most snipers are 1 hit kills to the body, making gun sway important, but with a Halo approach (2 shots to the body, or 1 head shot) significantly less gun sway would be needed at medium - long ranges to balance the weapon. But at extremely long ranges, that sway would be much more of a problem, and could make sniping at long ranges far too difficult. I would like to point out that I am assuming there is no "hold breath" option that makes your aim perfectly steady, because it shouldn't be needed since gun sway would be quite low at typical engagement ranges. Sorry about the wall, it was mostly a rant, so I reordered some of it to make more sense. I'm not against bullet drop, I just think that weapons will feel very similar to the way they did in Halo, and that bullet drop doesn't fit with how the sniper in Halo felt. So should Bungie choose to maintain that feeling, I would like to offer an alternative. I would also like to note that I do think bullet drop and bullet travel time should exist, I just don't think it should have a significant effect on gameplay, which is why I had a hypothetical sniper rifle that takes those concerns away from the player.

Does anyone here have any idea what the purpose of a Sniper Rifle is? Take out enemy targets, at LONG range. You want it to shoot far, because the further it shoots, the further you can be from the enemy.
-
I would use travel time. Have the bullets velocity decrease with distance, so you can hit targets at range but not insane distance.
-
It's a sniper, in the future...of course it's going to shoot far.
-
I see your point, but I think this would only be an issue if the PVP takes place in the 'sandbox environments' and not in specific, appropriately sized stages. Personally, I sank a lot of time into Red Dead Redemption free roam multiplayer, and I was mostly fighting people barely within draw distance. The snipers had no bullet drop and were as pin-point accurate as your connection would allow, which is funny for a game taking place in the early 1900's. I loved it, but for a game like Destiny, that kind of weapon dominance would kill the experience. Maybe the accuracy will fall off at extreme ranges. Maybe the damage will, instead. I believe PVP will take place in "arenas" built from locations in the game world or on unique maps, and that sniper distance won't be any more of a problem than it was in Halo.

Bullet drop, travel-time, maybe even simulated wind. But the high-caliber high-velocity projectile would still annihilate, realistically. Time will tell.

Edited by Reclaimer: 7/24/2013 1:27:38 AMThe sniper should be a beast in range and power, but that's not to say it should be OP. What if it was setup like H4LO's binary rifle, where its a one shot kill anywhere and only has 1 or 2 rounds in a mag?
-
I agree with this post about bullet drop. In BF BC2 bullet drop made sniping a challenge and evened the playing field considering 8 of the 10 rifles available were 1 shot killers. Limiting the range of a sniper rifle would suck and makes no sense. It is a weapon solely designed to engage opponents at extreme long ranges. Limiting damage would spoil it as well. In the real world high caliber rifles can pierce tank armor. Best defense against snipers? Camouflage, cover and suppressing fire. That's my 3 cents lol.

lol dont snipers need to be for long range

Is it me or does the sniper gun just have way too much range? Just because its accurate doesn't mean it needs to shoot far. I mean Tiger Woods is accurate, but he doesn't pull up from half court and score a grand slam now does he? The sniper is too powerful from far away. I mean every game I'm in there is some noob off to the side just sniping everyone. I was playing on Boneyard and the noob didn't even let me charge up my laser. He just noob shotted me in the head. Bungie, there is something wrong here. Last game on the Reflection me and my little brother rushed Rockets and shotgun when the game started, but this noob didn't even follow us. He went straight for sniper gun. And then me and my brother got killed by some DMR noobs and they took our Rockets and then that sniper noob just kept killing people from the side. He had almost all of our teams kills. I got so mad at him for stealing my kills I went up and betrayed him because I wanted to show that idiot I don't deal with noobs on my team. Then I picked up his sniper gun and wasted all of the ammo. I'd rather have 5 kills and 20 deaths with skill weapons than going 20-1 (I guess I was the only one that could kill that noob) with that noob sniper. So thats what I did. I showed him that I have zero tolerance for noobs on my team. It takes no skill to use a sniper, you just shoot their head once. I think you should improve a gun that requires more skill. Thats why I think you should give the shotgun more range. Not as much as the sniper gun, but about as much as the DMR. This way skilled players like myself will have a chance with these noobs. Its impossible to take out a sniper with the shotgun. Another way to change is to add some spread to the sniper gun. That really showed those DMR noobs. I think it could be very good in stopping the sniper gun noobs. bulldogs69 8/29/10 Originally posted by Naked N00B

Edited by ToxicruM: 7/23/2013 9:35:18 AMHow do you think the three weapons slots in the game will factor in the gun play of competitive matches? Also the class abilities such the hunters one shot kill: http://www.bungie.net/pubassets/1288/Destiny_42.jpg http://files.destinyhub.net/images/e3/vlcsnap-2013-06-10-20h47m15s179.jpg Does it not raise another problem of different weapons becoming overpowered? For example a player using a pistol activates the said ability and not only does he dominates in close quarter matches he also decimates in long range match types ergo its Halo CE pistol all over again. And lastly weapons have upgrade paths as seen here: http://files.destinyhub.net/images/e3/vlcsnap-2013-06-10-20h58m38s130.jpg Now taking the sniper into consideration what if it has a less bullet drop upgrade or a quicker reload upgrade. Or a rocket launcher has an increased blast radius upgrade and coupled with the hunter one shot kill ability it becomes a Davy Crockett waiting to be used. How do you think the weapons can be altered for a PVP matches in such situations? I would really like to hear you thoughts on this matter.

It's still to hard to judge at this point, simply we don't know what the damage ratio is for snipers and we haven't seen any gameplay. Not to mention we don't know there structure of the pvp arenas or areas etc... If there is any, So I would consider discussing this when we actually have info on snipers and pvp

A sniper rifle that shoots too far? I didn't know those words could be used in a sentence like that.
-
Its called walls they normally exist. Hide behind them.
-
It's all in the bullet drop/ weapon sway.

What the -blam!- are you doing? If you ask them to nerf the sniper rifles, they will overnerf it like they did to the plasma launcher in the Halo: Reach beta when people bitched about it being unfair. That weapon was useless by the time the full game was released! Nerf it and the Hunter will be useless! I don't want two character choices instead of three because of the Hunter's nerfed skills! Nerf -blam!-ing space magic out of anything! One magic bomb annihilated that gameplay demo boss in a second.
