Khonsu is the Egyptian god of the Moon. He is also known as "The Traveler." He is attributed with many traits that sound a lot like those of the of the Traveler in Destiny.
"Khonsu was instrumental in the creation of new life..."
"...Embracer, Pathfinder, and Defender, as he was thought to watch overnight travelers. As the god of light in the night, Khonsu was invoked to protect against wild animals..."
According to http://www.egyptianmyths.net/khonsu.htm
"His name derives from the root, "khens" which means to travel, to move about, to run."
This sounds a lot like The Traveler in Destiny, a protector against the night who gives fertility, vitality, and safety to those underneath. Khonsu was attributed with healing powers, such as the ability to cast out demons, however he later was evolved into a more warlike god who feasted upon hearts. Hopefully the Big Ball doesn't take the same course, unless it would mean it would attack our enemies.
Thoughts?
(By the way, it'd make sense for Bungie to be drawing from ancient religions in Destiny since the Halo series had obvious references to the Pentateuch [the first five books of the Old Testament])

This is perhaps one of the best threads I've read in a while, thanks OP

The connections to Egypt are unrelenting, it's a deep rabbit hole. This is new to me though, and very interesting.
-
In myth series (bungies old rts game ) there are so many egypt effects . like muirthemne pyramid or Walls Of Muirthemne .
-
So my theory about the Traveler secretly being the moon was right!?!?!?!
-
I'd like to point out that the Triangular ships that people believe are controlled by the Glimmer look like pyramids. The Ancient Egyptians used the pyramids to bury their Pharaohs, and they put valuables in the burial chambers that the pharaoh could take into their afterlife. The glimmer are also depicted as Phantoms or sprit-like beings, does anyone think that there is a connection there.

Now that I´ve read this I remember reading this a few years back in school and it makes sense that Bungie would have gotten the ide from this.
-
Also note the existence of a faction called Osiris. So there's definitely some level of Egyptian influence.
-
Holy crap nothing makes sense no
-
In Ancient Egyptian mythology the stars and the planets were gods, the stars were fixed but the planets traveled, the word planet means" wander". If you look inside the logo for the faction Osiris, you will see the moon. The emblem on the should guard for the Fallen is the symbol for one of the four pillars of the Goddess Shu, in ancient Egypt. Bungie most definitely took their inspiration from ancient Egypt.

Wouldn't be surprised if it were true
-
Yep stargate makes perfect sense. Its pretty cool all the different references made or put into a game. "Inspiration"

Khonsu is also depicted with the head of a wolf and he can make extra time with moonlight, usually when he gambled it was for one of the five part of the soul: the Ba, the Ib, the Ka, the Ren, and the sheut: the personality, the heart, the life force, the identity( all recollection of memories and feelings), and the shadow wich explains why he is said to devour hearts. It seems that bungie is going to use lots of Egyptian terms.

This is the world. Bungie seeks world domination through the art of video games.
