I'm not a tech guy. When I saw the limited details about the PS4, it didn't mean much to me. The same is true for the XB1. You can describe components until you are blue in the face and it doesn't mean a whole lot. It's just a bunch of numbers. Numbers that look remarkably similar in fact.
The differences in the machines, as far as we know, are about functionality. Sony told us how it's about the games. They showed video after video of game trailers to underscore that point. Microsoft on the other hand showed us the machine's versatility. You can switch between apps, watch TV, get sports exclusives, and so on. It sure makes them sound different.
But wait a minute, those numbers at the beginning sure were a lot alike. What gives?
It's because, in all likelihood, they are much closer to each other than it seems. With such similar hardware, the gaming capability will be comparable. This was the case in the current generation of machines. And we know both new consoles play games even though Microsoft didn't spend much time on it.
I would also infer that the PS4 has a lot of versatile entertainment functions as well. Why wouldn't it? With the same hardware, why would they limit themselves to just gaming?
It's all about the message being sent at the press conferences. Sony preached games. Microsoft preached versatility. The focus was different to start different kinds of buzz about their products. Neither message gave us a complete picture and that's intentional. Speculation builds the hype.
For me, don't ask me what in buying. It's too soon to say. I've had an Xbox for the last two generations so that's where I'm leaning. to this point, we haven't seen enough to sway my opinion one way or another.

Wow, there are a lot of intelligent, open minded posts in this thread. Some (but not all) faith in the Bnet forums has been restored!
-
who cares what you think. Can you guys stop posting about next-gen consoles ffs. x1 doesn't work outside 21 countries so I guess rest of the world made up their mind already.

Another thing: I find it hilarious that these people hating on MS are hating on them for showing them a console, mentioning (in brief) what they're going to focus their whole E3 time on (the Games), and showing us that this console is a powerhouse that is much more than a one trick pony. However: At Sony's reveal, they told us really no more than "It only does EVERYTHING!!!!!1!1!11!" (sounds remarkably similar to another tech company that recently had a huge reveal...), showed us a whole raft of games, then showed us nothing about their console... not even a still shot. So MS shows us an actual console, demonstrates that it does many many things very well, with the promise to blow our minds with it's gaming power in a couple of weeks. MS says: "Trust us, we got your back Gamers!" Gamers: "That's not good enough M$!!!! Gives us the precious N@OW!!!!!" Sony says: "We gots games. I does bunches more, even though you can't see it... trust us, the console is on the way!" Gamers: "We love and trust you, Sony!!!" ---------- If we're going to spew hatred and vitriol across the aether that is the internet, could we at least not be hypocrites and eviscerate both company's equally?

Your ignorance of what the numbers mean doesn't mean everyone else is ignorant of it.
-
It's just a bunch of numbers
Thats not very nice

I'm getting the xbox one because of titanfall and if the next halo turns out to be good. It's all about the games and xbone has better exclusives.
-
I had to laugh at Sony coming out first with all the stuff the PlayStation did. ( We don't watch, you, you can trade games, No internet required. When you need to lead with what your competitor allegedly does. It shows how concerned you are.

Too much to read...

Edited by Rex2: 9/3/2013 8:53:45 PMIn regards to specification: it has been pretty much over-analyzed at this point. On paper, PS4 has what many believe to be a significant technical advantage over the X1. Over course, what that amounts to in form of preformance, I don't know. I've heard claims from some developers (ie John Carmack) that the two are equal, while other guys (ie Witcher 3 dev, Jonathon Blow) say there will be a discrepancy in multiplatform games. And about messaging, I wouldn't exactly call it empty rhetoric that is purposefully ambiguous (not that you specifically call it that, but you suggest messaging is only being used for hype). I think messaging says a lot about a direction being taken by Sony/MS/Nintendo. If you noticed, Nintendo's current message is "PLAY THE GAME. It's all about DA games. X1/PS4 launch have nothing on OUR GAMES" which is quite different from what it was before: "Bowl with grandma". That's because Nintendo is in a position where they need to regain the hardcore, which they can't do with casual focused messaging. Compare this with MS, where with Xbox OG/360 the messaging was "XTREEEEEME gaming/Games will never be the same" to where it is now "TV/Kinect/Games/SPOATS/Music/all in one. INPUT ONE." The change in messaging reflects MS direction/desire to take over the living room/beat Apple to it. I guess if you're a straight up gamer and don't want MS to be the vector by which you access things your other tech can already do, then Xbox is a pretty unattractive solution to console gaming. note: I am on the fence for the nextgen consoles (leaning PS4). Waiting for Halo 5 gameplay reveal to know which side to get off on. Damnit, long post - I get carried away sometimes...
-
You feel that?I feel a console war coming on.
-
My two cents I have had 4 playstations and 3 xboxs. I have 2 working xboxs and no working playstaions. that said I have never owned a PS3, after 4 other sonys broke I never looked back. I am not saying I will not consider the PS4, but I am leaning XB1 just on previous experience. Ultimately I will wait for Destiny's release and decide then.
-
wish people didn't jump to conclusions so much... good post

Very well said
For me, don't ask me what in buying. It's too soon to say. I've had an Xbox for the last two generations so that's where I'm leaning. to this point, we haven't seen enough to sway my opinion one way or another.
Really? Get both.
-
its about the the moneys both companies dont care
-
It's not about the console.. it's about sending a message
-
I like Sony's games more and that is simply what it boils down to in the end; What games you like.
-
Great Post, I don't understand why people are picking apart MS when Sony has actually given us nothing and shown us nothing but computer rendered graphics and gameplay? They didn't even show us what the games look like on their system. Everyone is sitting around saying that they don't want all this extra stuff that Xbox has? Why wouldn't you want extra for the money yous spend? I'd rather work for a company making 100k a year vs 50k a year for doing the same work, wouldn't you? In truth everyone is saying that MS had a bad reveal. At least they showed us something more than a controller.
