LASTEST NEWS: Wired sat down with Phil Harrison, Microsoft's VP, to clear up a few things surrounding the Xbox One. In the interview, Harrison has thankfully clarified what this thread was complaining about, and debunked it. Great news for families of gamers, great news for friends who share games. See the link above, or read the extract here:
Wired: So as another example, if I took my disc and went to a friend’s house, would I be able to play that game on his machine?
Harrison: Yes, you can. You can take your game around to your friend’s house just as you would today — that’s assuming you have a physical disc — and what we’re doing with the new Live technology is that… with the disc, it’s just a repository for “the bits”. You can put that disc into his drive, you can play the game while you’re there, and then you go home and take that disc with you. But actually, “the bits” are still on his drive. If your friend decides that he really likes to play that game, then he can go buy it instantly, and it doesn’t need to download again. It’s already there. Once he’s paid for it, it’s immediately there.
Yay!
Edit with response from Xbox Support: https://twitter.com/Dropship_dude/status/337209329344204800. Essentially they're unable to confirm or deny this at this moment in time.
The link above outlines how used games will not have to paid for again to use at a friend's house, so long as you sign in with your profile to use it. While we do not know for certain that this is the exact case, it does bring up a pretty big issue:
That sounds all well and good, but when my profile takes 10+ minutes to download because of the amount of data on it, it's a major inconvenience. Additionally, it prevents my friends from being able to earn their own achievements on the game.
However, the biggest issue I have with this is what's essentially a "-blam!- you" to gaming families and friends who share games. My brother and I have an Xbox 360 each, and play different games all the time. We very, very rarely game with one another. He often buys games that I don't want to buy, and I often buy games he doesn't want to. With the current, "sure, borrow the disc" system, that's no problem. I want to play Modern Warfare 3 for a bit? No problem, just borrow the disc. He wants to play Forza 4 for a bit? No problem, borrow my disc.
But then comes the Xbox One.
With this new system, as apparently confirmed by Larry Hryb at the link above, if my brother wants to borrow my game to play with his friends, he has to sign into my account. So he can no longer play with his friends, because I haven't added them. Not only that, but it means I cannot play my other games without being signed into a profile, so I physically CANNOT play games unless I'm using his profile. And, remember what I said about me having games he doesn't have? Let's say he's borrowing Forza 5 in the future, and I want to play Watch_Dogs. He doesn't have Watch_Dogs, so I would have to buy it again just to play it while he plays Forza. I'd have to start all over again because it's a new profile, and I wouldn't be able to play with my friends.
Microsoft, if this is truly the case, then what exactly were you thinking? For a social gamer like myself, who frequently borrows and lends games from and to friends and family, this is the worst thing I could possibly imagine about the new Xbox. The requirement for an internet connection isn't as much of an issue to me any more, because my network is quite reliable now. But this? This takes the cake.
This is assuming what Major Nelson has stated is in fact true. Full clarification is what I'm after here, because at the moment, Microsoft are laughing at families and friends who regularly share games.
Important note: People are jumping to the conclusion that as a result of speculation, I hate the new Xbox and will not be getting it. This isn't true. I'm pointing out an issue I have with the One, and trying to address it. Please take this into consideration before replying. Chances are I will be getting the One, because of Forza 5 and the fact most of my friends will be getting it (plus I adore Xbox controllers). However, there's still a slim chance I'll get the PS4. It's down to E3, methinks.
Edited by DEZARATH: 5/24/2013 2:57:51 PMI don't think they really realize the backlash that's going to take place come mid 2014 on Gaming Consoles with these friends and family issues inherit with them. For one Developers who pull stunts like Gearbox with Alien CM or release subpar unfinished games will be committing suicide. Pre-Orders are going to drop and Buying a game day one are done. Any reviewer who gives one of these games a 9.5 is basically throwing their credibility to the fire. These next gen games are not going to be cheap. So the industry better gets it's act together and release only the best polished games possible to warrant this fleecing of the Consumer. They might be trying to target stealing but they are hitting the everyday non forum using silent masses as well. Gouge us with mediocrity at your peril with this much money being asked of the consumer.

As I posted in another thread before: My dad and I trade games with each other often as we game on our own xboxes in our own rooms and now we'll basically have to pay twice. It's truly a joke.

They won't be able to earn achievements for a game they never paid for? The horror! Oh lord no!

Edited by BerzerkCommando: 5/24/2013 12:33:03 PM
Additionally, it prevents my friends from being able to earn their own achievements on the game.
Oh no they can't unlock something that's completely pointless. It's a wonder how they survived during the dark ages/times when games didn't have something so pointless. Really OP you don't need achievements to play the game. The game is just as fun without them. Do you really need an achievement just because you did something in a game?

It's suspicious that Microsoft isn't releasing information about a subject that could cause them to lose customers. If the situation wasn't bad for the customers they would have clarified the information immediately. They are probably holding back the bad news so they don't spoil the reveal.
-
The Xbox One does not seem like the "watercooler"Microsoft claims it to be.
-
Do you see any other way to get rid of disks other than making a code exclusive to any given console? If you do, then I will agree with you, if not, then you should consider why microsoft did this.
-
If you read what Nelson said you would understand that it will indeed work the way it does now on the 360. Loaning a game to your brother would be the same as you trading it in at a game store and then your brother buying it. It's all good, I think the mention of signing in at a friends house just outlines the fact that your profile is now in the cloud so you can pick up your saved game and play with friends no matter where you are. G.

Look at you people thinking you're entitled to everything. Here's a solution! Don't buy the console!

Steam, lets bring the PC to the living room Microsoft, Sorry valve we beat you to it. Consumers F**k you Microsoft we want steam not you. Valve: LOL Microsoft: Dafuq? It's the same type of system as them! Consumers: But Valve and steam are awesome sause. That's all im seeing right now, blind Microsoft hate.

Edited by The Dark Hadou: 5/22/2013 1:10:31 PMThe quote from Major Nelson is only talking about playing games at your friend's house not what will happen amongst family members. Every complaint about family members not being able to share games is all just assumption at the moment.
-
Edited by NaLo: 5/22/2013 12:17:26 PMSo it's exactly like Steam.
-
Edited by Cobravert: 5/22/2013 12:47:16 PMDo you and your brother share socks? Do you and your brother share proprietary computer software? In a way I can't say I blame them and this has been on the horizon for some time. Yes it sucks to the consumer, but business is business. Game Stop is going to have to come up with a new strategy. Looks like they are simply eradicating the second hand game market.
-
Okay..
-
Edited by Ler: 5/22/2013 12:43:10 PMNo this has already been confirmed, your friends can play your games with no fees on their profile. Next complainers?

Want a tissue? Grow the -blam!- up. The industry is evolving. Adapt and overcome, or cry and whine and look like a spoiled child.

Edited by antony X1000: 5/22/2013 12:32:12 PMYeah, this system kind of sucks. My 2 brother and I tend to buy different games, then just borrow games from each other. Playing on a single console isn't an option either because we all play at roughly the same time on different games. With brothers like mine sharing a gamertag isn't an option either, so the only option would be to buy multiple copies of games.

Edited by irishfreak: 5/22/2013 12:25:30 PMYou do realise that profiles can be put onto usb drives

Would the problem be solved if you played on the same Xbox?
