The effect of combat on ambience

In Skyrim, when you are happily frolicking through the forest there is birdsong, mandolin music, and the rustling of the breeze. When you get attacked, or enter combat, the music takes a dramatic tone and the relaxation is over. This is a decent system, but I think Destiny could do it better. Make it so that ambient sounds, not music, portrays the mood (hear me out, I'm only talking about when you are exploring, not when you are in an epic moment of battle). So while you are walking around in the jungles of Venus, your footsteps make a gentle *crunch crunch* and you can hear the sound of your armor (or cloth) flexing. The birds sing in the trees, ambient critters scurry about (space squirrelz!), and basically you are very aware of everything around you. Then suddenly you spy a Fallen scout ahead. You whip out your sniper rifle, crouch, and BAM! No more Fallen. But you no longer hear the sound of birds, the critters have de-spawned in the underbrush, and maybe a slight change in the sound of your footfalls. Hearing becomes more selective, filtering out unnecessary things, like the breeze, while you hear the echo of your gunshot rumble around the forest. This is based upon what it feels like when hunting in real life (something I do quite often). In Destiny it can be assumed that we will have hearing protection so gunshots and explosions won't cause much ear-ringing, but when your adrenaline hits your attention becomes focused, the breeze doesn't matter, the report of your gun spooking the enemy/animal matters, your pace quickens, and your movements become slightly twitchy. (I don't mean that when in the heat of combat everything will seem scary and fast, but rather that when out of combat the mood will be relaxing enough that fighting will seem more blunt and jarring) Thoughts? (there could certainly be more little things, but I'd like to hear what you think) EDIT: One more thing, this same ambiance could be affected by your enemies, for instance a far off explosion of some Cabal mining could make the critters restless, and the ambiance more quiet and brooding.

  • effin-A progo you thug. This is so much win, I'm all about this idea. I would definitely like to see/hear birds fluttering away after a loud sniper bang as well. Or how sick would it be to see some little fox like creature run past you and you turn around and see a fallen squad charging in the distance. That seems like it might be beyond the scope of the engine for this game, but still it would be awesome if they included it, or something similar.

    • Just posting over a link to my post as they appear to be sister posts. I believe that sound has much to do with the immersion factor in the game, like in BF3 where you would hear gun fire in the distance. If you were to look down a long open space like the wall in Old Russia, it would be neat to see another fire team crossing a bride, even if it were just NPC's. If you were just exploring to hear gun fire and chaos in the distance would be a constant reminder that danger lurks all around you. If you were exploring and you could hear birds chirping, then they stop, and THEN you get attacked. That would blow my mind. The Last of Us was incredible for the music and the ambiance, it was a game that actually caused me to get stressed while playing. I don't want Destiny to stress me out, but I want to get involved in the world, I've always been a fan to role play and when I play an mmo, I become the character. That is one of the reasons why I am so excited with Destiny that they are putting so much effort into customization. Have the customization with a living world and ever changing ambiance...

        • This would assume that there would be quiet and more or less peaceful moments spent walking through forests, which I hope there are. The contrast between fighting and peacefully traveling would be awesome and make both more interesting. It would be cool and add even more if there are surprises and lone fallen waiting in forests for you.

                • i think that would be a great thing, it could be a real key thing when say your in the forest and you don't hear the animals or birds, etc when they are usually there. You would know that something was off and search around for why that is and find a dead fallen on the ground and as you go to inspect it you have someone call out to you saying to don't touch it. You look behind and see someone hiding in the bush and instinctively go over and join the person, as you hide you notice other fallen coming and when they get close you both attack.

                • This would be very cool. I would love to see this in action while walking through some quiet woods and suddenly running into an ambush and having to re-orient yourself and fight out of the situation.

                  • If Bungie could bring the intensity that the first Dead Space brought, that to me would be amazing. I have never been more focused on a game before in my life. I would be so immersed in the game that outside of the game if a loud noise was made or something like that it kind of startled me.

                      • That is a brilliant idea, and you should be happy to know that developers have implemented this idea for a while already. Play through enough campaign or MMO's enough, and you'll eventually learn to hear changes in music and environments interacting to enemy presences all the time. No doubt Destiny's gonna implement that as well, but creature/animal presence will be minimal by my guess

                      • 2 wordzzz: Hardcore Dubstep....yes let it sink in...haha. So like Skyrim were is tranquil music and then all of a sudden some -blam!-ing Green Dragon (what were they called again?) lands and attacks everything then some epic music starts. I take out my mace and shield and attack only to be attacked by mudcrabs and those freaking fish...then that dragon hits me with frost breath and that hurt...so after a couple of minutes of running for my life it lands and Mjoll takes the kill with her Giant's club...so yeah like the idea.

                      • I would like to see nature notice the threat before you do in some cases. For example: As you are walking through the jungle to get to the Mumbai Push, the birds are chirping and there are animals running through the forest. A deer walking infront of you about 20m away and looks down the path infront of you, its body facing the East and its head facing the South. Its ears perk up and it still hasn't lowered its right leg. The birds have stopped chirping. You ready your weapon. You point it at the deer's head and wait. The moment the deer bolts off you take the shot, it just missing the bird's head and piercing through the cranium of a Fallen Vandal. The fight begin. By the end of it, you have taken down three Vandals, two Dregs, and a Captain. After a moment a baby deer runs across your path to catch up with its mother. As you catch your breath and refocus on the task at hand the birds begin to chirp again and the animals begin to move. They saved you. The thing is, all of these extraterrestrials are foreigners and aliens to the animals as well. The animals don't react to them like they do to other animals or even Humans. You are not just fighting for your worlds and species, you are also fighting for their's.

                        • Awesome idea! No, really! There's just one problem I'm seeing with it.. Where exactly on the Moon, Mars, Io, or an asteroid field are you going to find wildlife? If this only applies to Earth (and maybe Venus, because apparently jungles can now survive in an atmosphere of acidic death), I kind of doubt they'd implement such complex programming..

                          • I want the ability to turn off music when I'm in certain areas. Like if I'm in the woods or jungle I would want it off there but in the City or Desert it'd be fine for me. Something like that that just adds THAT much level of customization is the kind of attention to detail that could set Destiny over the top. Not so much with the contribution to the game, but the time they take out of their schedule to implement something so, really, insignificant.

                            • It would be difficult, tedious, and complex. But that's what an army of AAA programmers is for.

                              • Bungie needs to pull this off, for the reasons that have been stated. There needs to be the ripple effect, throw a pebble in a lake, the ripples effect what you can see but the distant shore also. The next gen consul should be able to pull this off. As stated " a living breathing world", make it so.
