I think it's just about finding a balance between a familiar world, and one that we want to escape into while we play. Accessibility is a big factor, and yeah, lots of people don't have imaginations, and would be totally repulsed by playing a game like Kirby's Epic Yarn, because there's *nothing* relateable about it.
