I believe sexism against men is one of the most ignored problems today. In my opinion, many refuse to acknowledge sexism against men because of a few reasons: 1) Men are by nature physically stronger then women and can defend themselves with greater ease. This does not account for date -blam!- drugs and man-on-man -blam!-. I have literally seen more than a half-dozen Yahoo! Answer pages where a 14 to 24 year old male will talk about being -blam!- and people (mostly women from my own experience) will tell him to "man up" and that he should have "enjoyed it" because he was a man. 2) Men are the cause of sexism against women, therefore should be given no quarter. This refuses the newer generations of men, who are more accepting of these social issues, the proper treatment they should get if ever on the receiving end of sexism. I believe that deep down, some members here are sexist when it concerns men. I saw that a few members are unfairly biased towards women and will deny anything remotely similar to sexism if it involves men, instead choosing to rebrand it as "male empowerment fantasies". Indeed, sexism against men seems to be a well-hidden attribute that some people have but rarely show. To this I want to add one more reason: 3) [b]Men are the only people that can be safely mocked. Imagine what would happen if women were featured in that video instead. Imagine the commercial depicted moms who go to a mall and see that many things are on sale. They proceed to basically ignore their children as they feed their guilty pleasure. Or how about an exact mirror of that ad? Women watching Sex and the City while they struggle to take care of their babies most basic needs. How many feminists do you think would like that ad? Because I think that the earth would tremble at their rage. There would be serious social and legal repercussions for the ad company that produced the video. To finish off, I'll share my view concerning how to get rid of sexism: I believe the best way to eliminate sexism towards both sexes starts at home with the parents. Most kids grow up seeing mommy or daddy fulfilling certain roles (for example, in some scenarios the woman takes care of the child, stays home and provides the emotional nurturing the child needs while the man is a little more distant, is the "working" parent and is the protector of the family). Through the advancement of social issues in society and through technology, these roles can be reversed, shared, etc. Imagine a child growing up without the idea that girls do mommy-like things and boys do daddy-like things. The mother can be the protector; mace and guns can take care of that. She can also be the working parent if she wants to. What's to stop a father from providing emotional nurturing? Nothing.
