Job Resume
I'm about to do my resume for the first time, any tips/advice?
Also, I didn't graduate HS so that's something I have to deal with on there, how should I go about doing so.

3 RepliesWait... what sort of job are you going for that you need a resume? If you didn't graduate from High School, you are likely applying for a job, and they normally have an application for you to fill out. Worry about getting your references together and stop focusing on what you don't need. Resumes are pretty much irrelevant unless you graduate from college.

I don't mean write them in the margins, but find ways to start your sentences with them. Format: Name Address, phone, email three words to describe your profession ________________ A one paragraph personal statement on why you rock. ________________ 12 or so bullet points in three columns on your competencies ________________ Education ________________ Personal achievements/awards ________________ Work experience Job title Company Start date/end date Summary of responsibilities List of accomplishments __________________ Technical proficiencies __________________ Community involvement That's the format I use. Why on earth would you not finish high school? It's hard enough to get a job these days, and it won't look good to employers. High school work is so damn easy.

I recommend getting your GED. Finding a job without a high school diploma or equivalent will be extremely tough. Highlight your skills.

Also, OP, on google there's plenty of sites that have resume templates. Basically you fill out the info about yourself and it will automatically format it to the proper layout for a quality resume.

Keep it to about a page, no more than 2. If education is thin, then highlight and emphasize your previous work experience, certifications, association memberships, or anything in your history that is related to the field/job for which you are applying. Volunteer work is still work experience. If you've taken ad-hoc classes and/or have experience in doing particular tasks, bring those to the readers attention. The resume is there to get put into a pile that the employer then says, "this is enough to make me want to interview the applicant and find out more about them". Also, if you have contacts/references within the industry who are willing to speak on your behalf (be sure to check with them before listing them), put down their name, where they work, what of your experience they will address, and multiple methods to contact them (phone and email is good).

When I made my resume for the first time, I didn't have any work experience so I basically just stated that I graduated high school and listed the activities I participated in, like joining the tennis team. My resume was so short. Also list some of your interests and hobbies as well as some skills you may have such as speaking skills, typing, etc.

Volunteer work will help. Also try to place your top skill first when talking about abilities that you have. You want the interviewer to see that skill first because it is the easiest for you to talk about.

Get a couple of people to spell/grammar check it. Nothing bites you more than a spelling error.
