Ben Affleck Vows to Live on $1.50 for One Day.
Uh, stay in bed and watch TV?
I can respect that as a high-visibility person (aka celeb) Mr. Affleck wants to raise awareness to the fact that much of the world lives in poverty. But just 1 day? A week, I would consider to be something significant and not easy to do.
There is also the fact that in areas that are impoverished, $1.50 can go a lot farther than it can in a Hollywood grocery store. I've seen those ads that tell me that I can feed a dozen kids for pennies a day.
So, I am a little mixed on my thoughts and reactions to this event. Part of me gives him some credit and praise for trying to raise awareness and part of me is scoffing at his commitment of "doing it for 24 hours". Hell, people willingly fast for longer periods of time.
What do you think? Is this an overall good thing? A good idea? Or, is it a bit shallow?
-
Well, let's review... Are we or are we not currently having a discussion about the exact issue that he aims to raise awareness about? I'd call that one point for Mr. Affleck.
-
Sleep all day?
-
How can you blame him? $1.50 would barely even be enough for him to buy enough water to survive.
-
Meh, it has good intentions so I won't bash it but like you said $1.50 can go a lot farther in impoverished countries, so it's not that realistic.
-
You could do nothing all day, just breath air, you can go a few days without food or water.
-
The idea was good, but doesn't seem to be well-executed.
-
I couldn't get back and forth to work on $1.50 a day. - Der
-
How about getting rid of everything that he has for a day....and then living on $1.50? Or is that what he is doing?
-
That's kind of funny. But... yeah, one day? You could just not eat for a day it isn't too hard. But... eh.
-
How about all of the people that don't live on failing monetary systems at all but live for themselves off of the land?
-
While I appreciate his sentiment, I agree that one day is too short a time. I think a better approach would be him living a week/month in a poverty stricken area where we can see not only how he adjusts but how other people are living. Then afterwards donate to the community or something.
-
I'd be more impressed if he went and lived in the third world for a dollar fifty a day. It's a good cause, but a bizarre way to get attention, and seems likely to draw negative attention.
-
Oh, Ben Affleck exists.
-
saw it. Not impressed. I'd be willing to bet it will take a lot more than 1.50 just to water his lawn that day..
-
Edited by brandorobot: 4/23/2013 7:37:46 PMSo he's going to sleep on the streets? It's kind of pointless if at the end of the day you're sitting in a multi million dollar home, or a home period. If you live on 1.50 a day you're homeless, in America at least.
-
One day? Lol. Buy some ramen noodles and you're set.
-
If he were sincerely interested in raising awareness of global hunger, he'd volunteer to fast for at least five days.
-
I have gone a whole day without spending money. If you count being over a friends house.
-
Well if he is still shacked up with Garner then "doing it for 24 hours" would be a blast.
-
Raman noodles for all three meals is like $0.66. Then again, we can go without food for a few days.... Probably the better choice too. I think it's just a publicity stunt. Do it for a month and then i'll change my mind.
-
This is exactly the same as "Don't Buy Gas on XX/XX" Everyone just buys more the day before, or buys more the next day, it doesn't last long enough to have an impact.
-
Anyone can for one day. There are days I would voluntarily do nothing and ate only ramen noodles. Doing it for one day is just a vacation. I'd say 3 days and you're making a point. But, being he is Ben Affleck, simply announcing it gets people talking, as we are now. So I guess given his stature, he doesn't have to do it for long to be effective at getting his message out. Heck, he really doesn't even have to follow through with it, since just saying he would gets the message out that he wanted.
-
Uh, stay in bed and watch TV?
Exactly. I don't think he's doing this for a long enough period of time. He should either do it longer, or not do it all all.
-
Thats cool.. I haven't bought something in weeks..
-
So is he just going to go outside or something? Because I could live for probably 2 weeks with no money with all the food I have in my house.
-
pretty sure some highfalutin politician made the news the other week for saying he could easily live on £10 a week (might have been a day i can't remember that well). either way lolhim he has no idea what money is; i struggle on £50 a week. OT: it's a nice gesture by Mr Affleck, but a fortnight or a month would be much more appropriate and worthwhile.
