Do you think that soundtracks are so important that they make or break AAA games? Or do you think that soundtracks are an addtional extra to the game?
I think they make or break AAA games such as Halo, CoD, Elder Scrolls, and Assassin's Creed.
Examples

2. CoD (Code of Conduct)
3. Elder Scrolls (Morrowind theme)
4. Assassin's Creed (Ezio's Family)
5. Destiny (I'm loving it so far)

If you've got a good soundtrack then you've won half the battle. Nailing a great atmosphere, setting the emotional tone and getting the player pumped to keep going is a no easy task to accomplish and that's the part the music plays to compliment the gameplay. Other than that, Balazeal pretty much hit the nail on the head.
