Do you think that soundtracks are so important that they make or break AAA games? Or do you think that soundtracks are an addtional extra to the game?
I think they make or break AAA games such as Halo, CoD, Elder Scrolls, and Assassin's Creed.
Examples

2. CoD (Code of Conduct)
3. Elder Scrolls (Morrowind theme)

music makes or breaks a game

If you've got a good soundtrack then you've won half the battle. Nailing a great atmosphere, setting the emotional tone and getting the player pumped to keep going is a no easy task to accomplish and that's the part the music plays to compliment the gameplay. Other than that, Balazeal pretty much hit the nail on the head.

Half the reason I enjoyed FC3 so much is because of the music that plays during every mission. To me music is just as important as the story.

Music can be great, but it doesn't automatically make the game better. It needs to resonate with the game, by say, contributing to the atmosphere, or really matching a certain moment.

It really depends on what you're trying to do. If your game is all about the action, a soundtrack that complements it is good enough. If it's more about developing a certain style or atmosphere, music becomes more important. Either way, better music can't hurt a game. And when you do something special, it takes the game to a whole new level.

It's not exclusive to AAA games at all. Soundtracks can definitely be crucial to a game's design. Games that rely heavily on atmosphere need to have a good soudtrack. The most obvious examples off the top of my head are Shadow of the Colossus, Silent Hill, and and Bioshock. In heavily stylistic games, the soundtrack can also play a huge role in reinforcing a certain aesthetic. That would include the previous games, but also games like Okami, Jet Set Radio, and Katamari. Just try to imagine those games without their soundtracks. It'd be completely different.

You have to have an amazing soundtrack. It can make or break a game. I couldn't see any of the games I have without their great music as well. It sets the vibe for the game, and without it, a gamer's experience would not be the same. Soundtracks definitely make or break a game :)
