With Iron Man 3 hitting theaters in just a couple of weeks, press chatter has once again turned to Robert Downey Jr.'s future with Marvel. The actor's contract ends with this latest sequel, and that leaves many fans wondering what that means for our beloved Tony Stark.
In a recent interview with GQ, Downey Jr. explained what's been going through his head in terms of retiring the character. "This period of time, this shall pass," Downey Jr. said. "Fortunately I've been around the block enough -- I'm not ill-prepared. And I love change. I love it when a lightning bolt hits the genny and you're down for two hours on the set. Now, this isn't a lightning strike, this is like the warning of a gathering storm."The "gathering storm" in question refers to Downey Jr.'s injury on the set of Iron Man 3, which shut down the production for several weeks.
"It got me thinking about how big the message from your cosmic sponsor needs to be before you pick it up," he says. "How many genre movies can I do? How many follow-ups to a successful follow-up are actually fun? Because, as quiet as it's kept, I come from a family of very innovative writers and directors and actors and artists... So there's this kind of legacy of souls from what I consider to be a very particular time in entertainment, and I'm sensing a return to that -- it's what me and the missus are doing next. It's not unlike: I heard Brady signed on for three more years with New England, and then he's done being a QB, because he'll be 40. I'm 47, and I'll be 50."
Although he hasn't formally signed on for The Avengers 2 yet, it's extremely likely that Downey Jr. will at least turn up for that film, if what he's hinting at now is true -- although it's no secret that money is at least a partial factor. The actor earned $50 million for The Avengers, and he admits that payment is in consideration for the sequel. "Me, the agents and the lawyers are having a bit of a ball right now," he noted.
That said, it's possible that The Avengers 2 could be the end of the road for Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark. Following that, does Marvel recast the role -- or... could Joss Whedon be planning to kill Iron Man? A lot to consider, but until then, we'll have to wait and see how it all shakes out.
So while it still seems likely he'll be in The Avengers 2 (not a given) it doesn't look good for him returning in any other Marvel related movies. It kind of sucks seeing as a lot of people liked him as Iron Man/Tony Stark including myself. I can't really see anyone else playing the character. It would be like someone else playing Wolverine instead of Hugh Jackman.
So if he does retire, what would you like to happen to the character? Cast someone else? Kill off Iron Man? What do you think?

No. NO. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
A Wikipedia quote from RD JR says he might be willing to do Iron Man 4 and possibly even 5. Let's hope!
-
I'll do it.
-
I'd like for them to simply stop that series of Iron Man afterwards, instead of milking it. Ya know, before it becomes bad. As for Robert, he's a great actor, and I could see him playing in movies that aren't so threatening to his health.

Edited by DeadliestDragon: 4/17/2013 1:25:17 AMI'm still trying to get my head around the fact that Downey Jr. made $50 Million dollars off one movie. Granted, the guy lives in California so the state took 50% in taxes and his agent took another 7-10% leaving him with only.....only $20-21.5 Million left.

Let's all just be thankful that Tom Cruise passed and Downy Jr. got the role in the first place. Plus a head hanco over at Marvel films said if he does leave Iron Man won't ever get a reboot.
-
Give me a good reason as to why they can't get Christian Bale as Iron Man
-
But he is the best Iron man.
-
Irololololon Man

I think that's a game ender for the marvel cinematic universe then. All of the actors in the MCU are awesome and fill their spots well (god they better not replace ruffalo, he was perfect, other guy was good) and RDJ is Iron Man in that universe, and for the casual fan base hes iron man completly. I think it's near impossible to replace him, and iron man is such a huge part of the avengers without him you lost a huge component. I can understand and respect an actor being done with a role, but either way, if he leaves or they kill him off the MCU will fall pretty hard for a lot of people
-
I never found him that appealing as Iron Man. Pretty overrated actor if you ask me. Sorry guys.
-
You can't have Iron Man without Rob, he is perfect for the role just like Hugh Jackman and Wolverine. Something about them just makes perfect and cannot be replaced.
-
Our only choice is to clone RD JR and make the clone play Iron Man / Tony Stark, FOREVER!
-
I hope so. I hate that man with a passion.
-
No one else can play Tony Stark but RD JR. But I hope that he does not quit the role, I want him to stick around till the end.
-
We all know how Joss loves to kill characters. Poor wash.
-
Edited by DarkSunnyboy: 4/17/2013 4:31:06 AMI can't imagine anyone else other than that awesome son of a gun playing Iron Man.
-
He had a good run, better to see him quit now at his prime
-
Probably the one character I wouldn't want to see recast. The series wouldn't be the same without him either. I think they should just end it after Avengers 2. It had a good run and I would prefer them to quit while they're ahead instead of making more and more until it starts to suck like literally every other successful movie series ever. Also what villain do they use after Thanos? They don't have rights to all of the other good ones...
-
Well that sucks, he was great as Tony Stark.
-
Just because his contract expires doesn't mean he can't renew it.
-
Don't forget, there's also more X-Men movies coming, and some of the X-Men later joined the Avengers. Maybe they'd have Wolverine take his place in future Avengers?
-
He can't play him forever. RD Jr will age, while his character will not.
-
He is the perfect Tony Stark, though. I mean, he basically plays himself. If he does it will suck big time, and the appeal of Iron Man will dwindle like hell.
-
RDJ IS Iron Man. If he doesn't play Tony, no one should. There are options though. Iron Man has already had 3 stand-alone movies, so they don't really need anymore. He can stick around for Avengers 2, and maybe appear in future Avengers, and the Iron Man movies could be finished. War Machine could fill his role in the Avengers, and there are plenty of other Marvel characters that have been on the team that could take his spot if he's gone. In the movies they could say anything. Tony could die, or just not want to be a hero anymore, or move to SHIELD's tech division and just have minor parts in the movies. It can work, and as much as i love the Iron Man films i doubt they need a fourth to properly tell his story.

i want to see him as tony stark in marvel zombies...or atleast as a CGI actor.
