How tolerant are you of other religions?

Obligatory blog post:
I was in the car with my mother the other day, and we had somehow found ourselves on the topic of God. I don't recall all the specifics, but long story short, at one point she said "Atheists shouldn't even exist, it's just wrong." When I didn't immediately agree with her and instead defended an Atheist's right to simply form their own beliefs, she semi-freaked out and asked if I was Atheist in the most judgmental tone :/ I replied no, but I am a closet Atheist IRL.
I consider myself to be pretty tolerant of other people's beliefs ^^ After all, they're just that; beliefs. There's really no right or wrong answer, it's all a matter of opinion. I find it really saddening that there exist extremists within some religions, though, and it's kind of hard to be tolerant of those people specifically. As long as you're tolerant of me, I'll be tolerant of you :P

  • Very tolerant. I'm more than willing to talk about and respect the beliefs of others too as long as they're not trying to convert me.

As I have loved you, so you must love one another. Pretty much sums up how I try to treat people of all beliefs and backrounds.

Not very. I find it hard to be tolerant of sets of beliefs that have directly contributed and continue to contribute towards the misery and intolerance their followers cause.

  • I'm glad you used the word tolerate. Because too many times people mix it with respecting beliefs. As what comes to my tolerance, I can tolerate religious beliefs as long as they don't cause any harm. When they do, I think they should be abolished.

I personally think that anyone who claims to 'know' is an idiot, going both ways. Ultimately though I really just don't care what other people think, if asked or provoked I will give my honest answers but don't expect to actually change anyone's opinion. So my tolerance is more out of just ignoring the subject. I judge people for actions, not thoughts.

  • I'm an Atheist, but I have no problem with anyone else's beliefs as long as they do not involve the persecution of other people.

  • Great question, and this is something I still struggle with. I think we should by default tolerate everyone we can until provided evidence they hold immoral fundamentalist beliefs. For example I do not tolerate anti gay bigoted Christians, Jews who practise traditional circumcision, or Muslims who believe in the implementation in practical versions of sharia law. Tolerance of intolerance is something I simply do not believe in because some beliefs do not deserve to be tolerated, they only deserve to be heard (because I believe in absolute freedom of expression). Unfortunately today fundamentalist religion has become so intolerant that there is a large force or evangelical Christians and fundamentalist Islamists that must not be tolerated IMO.

  • What someone "believes in" matters not one bit to me. They can believe in the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, Russell's Teapot, I am that I am, or ancient aliens. Those beliefs exist within their own head and they are welcome to them. What I find myself having difficulty with (on occasion, and depending on the circumstance) is people's actions. If they harm others, and then attempt to excuse it as a being "part of my faith", then I have a problem. Not with their faith, but with their actions. I have no need, desire or the time to try to "correct" anyone's beliefs. If we're capable of having a calm and rational discussion and I am curious, I don't mind learning about someone else's beliefs and their reasons behind their belief. But when someone does something that harms another? Using your personal beliefs as a "get out of jail free card" is (IMO) a sign of ignorance, desperation and insecurity.

    • I'm a devout Christian, and I'm tolerant of other people's beliefs. What I hate is when people give pretty much all Christians in general grief about not being tolerant or trying to force their beliefs on other people. For the most part, Christians are very tolerant of other people's religions or beliefs, but that doesn't mean we think it's okay. We just don't give people a hard time or judge people on their beliefs. And it makes me mad when people say we do.

    • As long as somebody else's beliefs don't hold me back or harm anybody, I'm completely tolerant.

    • It's their choice, I'm not gonna say anything. I'll respect them either way. But if they start bringing that religion into my life, and it's not something I agree with, than I will definitely stop hanging out/talking to that person. As long as they respect mine, I'll respect theirs. Not a big deal to me, it's their beliefs of what happens after death.

Tolerant of pretty much every religion except Islam--because I truly believe that Islam is a poison that will destroy anything it touches. Just as it is already infecting the UK by having Shariah instituted in certain cases, I don't want it coming to America and doing the same. They already screwed up the Middle East. Other than that, I don't care if you are a Protestant, Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Hindu, Buddhist, pagan, New Age or atheist. Just not a Muslim.

Depends on the religion. If you want to believe in a God go for it, just don't make it all you ever do or talk about. If you want to believe in something like Scientology, you're a -blam!-ing idiot.

    • Believe what you want, but once you start using your views to discriminate against others, disguise them as science and try to force them on others as political laws, my tolerance fades.

    • >implying a myself believe in a religion Largely, I'd say yes. But I'm a slight hypocrite in that I prefer the presence of/learning about more exotic (to me) or rare religions rather than plain old Christianity.

    • I'm tolerant, but only if the people in question afford other people the same tolerance. Example: my parents are Christian, I'm atheist. Normally this wouldn't bother me, but last month my mother said I 'should be Christian' and then implied Christianity has the monopoly on the moral compass. That sort of thing is one of the fastest ways to piss me off.

I'm really tolerant and I would not care if my son was atheist, despite the fact that I am a Christian.
