Defiance First Impressions (Xbox 360)

I have never ever been an MMO fan. I simply just could not get into the whole WoW thing at the time and just looked at it as another way to not go outside for years on end. I did try my fair shot with The Old Republic, but that only lasted a few weeks. Now here comes a little game called Defiance. I only heard that this was an MMO a few weeks ago. I was not really interested until I learned that it was a true to form TPS that just so happens to be massively multiplayer based. AND also the fact that it was also on the consoles. This is like the third ever MMO on the consoles that I have ever seen in this generation so that is pretty interesting to my eyes. Many people have their reservations; and rightly so since this generation has been outdated and obsolete for years now. Despite the more obviously superior performance and tried and true MMO following. I chose NOT to take this venture in the PC arena. Instead I wanted to jump into this game via the consoles, since this is sort of a special treat. I want to experience it in a unique way that you do not really see... So far, my impressions are pretty positive to say the least. Once you do get past the dull trained phase that tones down the AI to dyslexic levels. You are set loose in a huge world that is filled with brown, brown and more brown. Oh yeah, and some interesting missions that can come randomly or at your choosing. One moment I was riding my quad along a half destroyed freeway and I see several players fighting off an incoming mutant attack. Moments like these feel a bit organic and bring life into this always coop game. The main missions may also happen this way, thus making them go by faster and smoother at times. That is if you are not bogged down by lag. That is one BIG problem that I have with this game. When you are among a massive crown of people that are all fighting to same enemy; such as these Arkfall objectives. Your systems performance (or maybe the connection) plummets to crap levels. Hopefully this issue can be resolved with further patches, but as it stands. I am a bit discouraged to go near these Arkfalls. An Arkfall is a random world event that occurs all over the map. These give everybody the opportunity to fight world bosses and claim large sums of cash and loot. It truly is a sight to behold as you and hundreds of other players fight the same thing at once. Heck, if you look on the back of the box you can see the allotted number of players go from 1, to 10,000. Defiance does not function like a traditional MMORPG game. It does not make you spam hotkeys to attack an NPC with complicated math problems. It functions like a real dedicated shooter with a hint of Borderlands. The combat can be dull when you are fighting in smaller numbers. But once more and more pour in, you will find yourself playing a bit smarter than running in screaming "ABLOOGYWOOGIEWOO!!!" If you can get past the early problems of this game. Then Defiance has the potential to become a flourishing MMO on the consoles. It is a slow burn, but I am having a good time with it overall. The graphics may have taken their cue from the local crapper and the voice acting is lolable at best. However, Defiance offers something unique that has gotten my attention.
