So I am SUPER HYPED! about the Neill Blompkamp's new film Elysium. The trailer looks absolutely amazing! However, I am still very sad and bitter that the evil overlords at Microsoft killed the Halo film this guy was suppose to direct because you can see a glimpse of what could have been... (Click here for the details of why things fell apart)
In the interviews I've seen, he's stated that he probably would not return to another attempt to make a Halo film, and I am wondering if this is because he not-so-subtly incorporated thematic elements from Halo into Elysium. There are three obvious ones that stick out in the trailer:
1) http://i.imgur.com/CEWOK1Z.gif
Giant Ringed in Space Station
2) http://i.imgur.com/Vm6ejZD.jpg
Machine Modified Human Super Soldier

Pelican Looking Ship
It's hard to tell from a trailer and I don't want to put words into Neill's mouth but part of me wonders if he included this stuff to say, "see this is the cool film you would have gotten if you had let me go through with it." So, really excited about Elysium but as fan of Halo's fiction, it's kinda of bittersweet, probably more so for Neill and Bungie than for me though...

Microsoft didn't kill the movie, FOX and Universal studios did when they couldn't agree on anything.
-
If he does end up making the Halo movie I hope he makes it the same way he made Halo: Landfall. It was such a great piece of work.
-
I heard recently that he'd be willing to make a Halo movie... but only if he could make it on his terms. Can't remember where I saw the quote, but I think it was an IGN video.

Looks like another mediocre sci-fi movie. And it doesn't look like Halo at all.
-
can't wait :)
-
Mark my words, there WILL be a Halo movie one day.
-
I saw that a few hours ago, really cool stuff, I like the robot guys. Or soldiers, whatever the bronze colored dudes are.
-
I'm glad this was made instead of a Halo movie. Video game movies generally suck balls, regardless of how good the director is.

Edited by DarkSpyda04: 4/14/2013 8:16:43 PMIf there was a movie based on Halo it'd suck, anyway. Not because it's Halo but because movies based on games don't exactly end up a masterpiece. No, there's a saying that I use. If you try to remake it, you'll try to outdo it for the sake of outdoing it and lose sight of what makes it good to begin with. The only way to rekindle passion is to whipe clean the memory banks and begin anew. This said, I'm glad we're talking about something original being made. So far we got Elysium and Oblivion. Loving these sci fi movies that take themselves seriously. They show you something fresh while being itself.

Sharlto Copley looks pretty bad ass with that sword.

Last I checked the guy didn't actually want to do it because of how big Halo is, besides if anything microsoft SAVED the movie. Hollywood wanted a new director to make the film while microsoft wanted a well known and established director like Speilberg and Jackson. Microsoft walked in Hollywood laid down the terms as they would for a video game and since the 2 industries worked differently (Gaming industry works together while the movie industry does not) it ended up with microsoft postponing the movie.

BloomKamp can have my man babies, all his shorts and films are sexy sauce.
-
That really makes me think that Neil wanted to make that Halo movie :(
-
Halo is too cliche to make a remarkable movie out of it.
-
I'm going to watch District 9 again.
-
I mean, the Pelican looks like every dropship in sci fi so... Not to mention the fact that a Halo movie would suck.
-
Looks legit. Those visuals are incredible and it does make me sad there wasn't a Halo film by this guy.
Wow, seriously can't wait. I wonder where he got the inspiration for all of his designs.

So cyborg matt damon fights evil rich people? wat

Seems like forever ago that I'd heard about Elysium, I wasn't even aware it was this close to being released. Officially hyped, this looks incredible. It is a shame that he wasn't able to do a Halo movie, but I'm kind of glad nothing came of it. It was probably for the best, since we got District 9 out of the ashes of Halo. As well as this.

This does look pretty cool
