VERY good read! Full of little tidbits to keep your satiated during our down time inbetween now and E3. I will update with some info here and there, but hop on over and give it a read!
Highlights:
How far along is development on Destiny?
Well, I’m playing it every day at my desk; we’re deep into it and the great thing about the game right now is that you only really learn how the game works when it’s up on its feet and playable.
And Destiny is a pretty complicated game, it’s got an investment system and persistent characters, a big social shared world, so having it playable for real with all the systems running is a pretty big accomplishment and we’re learning a lot.
This is exactly where you want to be as designers, playing it every day with our friends at our desks, seeing what’s broken and fixing it. We’re definitely there now, that’s for sure.

It seems like you’ve had trouble actually defining what Destiny is?
It’s only been in the last six months that we’ve been able to play [Destiny] with everything running.
For a while we could play parts of the game; we could play the action shooter, the same old sandbox shooter that Bungie’s made and loved and does well. We’ve been able to play that for a while.
We could play, separate from that, our investment systems in a mock way, where we could just play through it in Excel tables with drops and loot and see how that part of the game played, but we hadn’t smashed them together yet.
We could play parts of our big open world, broken up into sections that import into our engine, but as our engine became more robust we could import large swathes of our world.
It’s been in the last six months that we’ve taken these things, that have been up and running separately, and got them all working in concert. During that time when [Destiny] was in bits and pieces, I think it was challenging for us to explain to Activision, even people on our team, what the game is going to be.
We can talk about it, we could have you read words, and walk through it in animated storyboards and sequences and say ‘this is what it’s going to feel like’.
But it was all a little bit on paper, it wasn’t in your hands and playable.
So, it’s been a challenge to describe what exactly it is. The important thing to remember about [Destiny] is that first and foremost it’s a Bungie game and those are the games we make and love.
You’re in a big world that’s populated by other players, a living world where things happen even if you’re not there.
It feels real, it’s got time of day, big open environments, it has social places where you can gather and it’s got a persistent character, someone you grow over time.
You’re going to choose who you are in this world and every decision you make influences how you look or how you fight. It definitely has properties of what you’d associate with MMOs, but it is at its heart an action game.
A Bungie shooter, but it has all these other great, great things added to it, which we think really think makes it a revolutionary experience in the shooter space.

Is it true that players will get their hands on spaceships, will there be space combat?
Well the only thing we’re sure of right now is that the spaceship is a thing that’s going to take you from place to place. Like other things that belong to you, you are going to be able to personalise it.
You’ll certainly have some choice over which ship you have. It’s another thing like your weapons or your armour that makes you you in the world of Destiny.
* 6 months with all playable features enabled? We could very well play this game in 2013!
** A nice dodge, but I think Staten knows very well that space combat is a huge part of Destiny!

Bump for those who still don't believe things were cut. He is clearly saying that there was a lot more to this game. 1) the world was affected by the things you did! How awesome would that have been?! 2) things happened in the background whether you were playing or not 3) it was more social 4) you could AT LEAST fly your ship! 5) it seems like there was a trade system 6) there was character progression in which your character was actually affected by your decisions 7) the world was much more open

Edited by DestinyInvestors: 4/17/2013 10:02:49 PMJust did a video about this! Let us know what you guys think. BTW, your post was very informative.
-
Hmmm. Their would be zero reason for customizable spaceships if it was just a cutscene or loading period for us to ravel to areas. Which means we'l be flying our ships. (Duh) I seriously doubt they would let the chance for some space combat slip by given the mechanics would already be in place. So excited for this game!
-
They did space combat pretty well in Halo: Reach. I definitely see it being a feature in Destiny!
-
Edited by exotitan: 4/15/2013 8:12:02 PMhere is a video summary about the interview, you can also look at this guy's other video's about destiny. they are pretty good.
-
He has to hold so much back. What excruciating pain.
-
I wish people would understand that it's likely not going to be out in 2013.
-
Every time I read the title I think "Joseph Stalin". Every time.
-
Awesome! After watching the GDC panel a while back I am utterly confident that this game is being made with talent, hard work and love. I have a feeling i will lose many hours to this game.
-
The more I hear about this game the more exited I get about it, I think this game will be a true masterpiece which is a word I don't use often. There haven't been any real interesting games out there that have gotten me hooked, it seems like most game companies these days don't really try to make good games anymore. I feel like its more about the money than the quality of the game. Ive always liked what Bungie did with there games, they actually try to make games that people will love. I don't know if anyone else feels the same but this is how I've been feeling lately. I can't wait for Destiny.
-
I loved the part where Staten said "well the only thing we’re sure of right now is that the spaceship is a thing that’s going to take you from place to place". ha. there's totally gonna be space combat!
-
QUESTION, PLEASE! If the game would come out in 2014, when would it be? Please don't say Christmas season! Please!
-
I hope space combat is in & hope like crazy we get it this year... A side note, what does your Avatar symbol represent? I know its available to us but curious what it is
-
the site appears to be down :c

Official Xbox Magazine has an 8 page spread on Destiny in their May 2013 issue. There is a fair bit of new information within. I highly recommend anyone just itching for information like I have been head over to their nearest store and pick up a copy.
-
I would be surprised if space combat turned out to be anything more than the section on LNoS. The article was great but I don't think this game will be out untill 2014, although I really hope i'm wrong.
-
Thanks, nice read.
-
I would still get Destiny for sure but would be pretty disappointed if space combat isn't involved. We've all been waiting for a good sci fi ground shooter that included space combat. We wanted it in ME 3, but, we were disappointed that it wasn't in the game (not mentioning the other things that were disappointing about that game). I honestly think it will be in there; I believe that the space combat mission in Halo: Reach was a test run to see if Bungie could do it well. Now they've had a few years to perfect it. Its going to be great.
-
Honestly, I don't mind not having space combat. Maybe in a DLC or another game, but considering it's a new universe Bungie's playing with, and the spaceship is a customizable "horse", I really think it's better to focus on ground play first, since that's the meat and potatoes of the game, and just let the spaceship be awesome cinematics that include your friends or strangers wherever you go.
-
This got me even more excited.
-
Good find! It seems like these interviews dig just a little bit depper ever time.
-
Edited by Phrase Universe: 4/11/2013 3:30:24 PMBeta is coming sooner than we think. At least that's what I was thinking while reading this. Good find.
-
Good find and good read, thanks bro.

Customizable spaceships! I have waited a long time for this.
