Cross-platform gaming, in my opinion, really needs to make a comeback, and a huge one at that. Many great games are available on multiple platforms, but very, very few of them are able to cross over and allow players to play with those on other platforms. One game which managed this early on was Shadowrun, which to this day brings back all too many nostalgic memories of incredibly fun gameplay. Granted I hardly ever actually played against the PC gamers in the game, but those times I did it worked and worked well.
So this brings up the point I wish to make here. Why is it, in 2013, we are able to make incredible devices which can connect the world and share things with whoever, whenever... but as soon as it comes to games we can't seem to get the PS3 version of GTA IV to work with the Xbox 360 version of the exact same game. Graphics can't be an argument, because PC gamers have the option of turning graphics up or down and it doesn't affect other players. I'm probably missing something here, but how hard can it be from a development standpoint to make it so console gamers see slightly dulled down textures (i.e. replace the texture files on the disc with lower-res ones) compared to the PC gamers?
I think it'd be great to be able to buy the next generation console, or keep on my PC, and stay connected with all of my friends on all platforms, and play together using whichever platform we want. What better way is there of bringing the platforms together, than a huge list of cross-platform games.
What are your thoughts?

Edited by Xmark120: 4/6/2013 12:52:20 PMMe and my buddy were separated due to us starting on different consoles, since I was always a hardcore competitive gamer I entered the generation with the Xbox 360, while my friend that wasn't as competitive as me back then jumped on the ¨PS3 has better single player games¨ bandwagon. While he didn't regret it due to Metal Gear, he still became attached to playing competitive double team Halo with me and later on admitted that he'll stick to the Xbox next gen, when he played the first Gears of war on the PC and became a fan of it. Having cross-platforming would help me and my buddy out.

Might be cool, but wouldn't the difference in controls give an advantage? (e.g KB+M vs 360 Controller)

Microsoft and Sony would have to reveal how their networks work with eachother. With that comes leaks which can expose information that can be used against one another. They won't be doing this just for that main reason.
-
Defiance was actually supposed to be cross-platform but Microsoft and Sony were like "No."

When I saw this thread, I mistakenly read your name as part of the thread title, as so: "The Next Generation Dropship: Blah blah blah" Anyway, I'm disappointed this isn't a discussion about Next generation dropships.

They should be, but with games like CoD in the marketplace and bitter rivalries between gaming consoles, it's unlikely to prosper. Not to mention gamers are being conditioned...

Obviously profit is the biggest factor in any companies decision making. This does not exclude Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo. I can assure you this would have been implemented long ago and would now be mainstream if there was a profit to be made by Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo.

Because there isn't a market for it? because it actually costs a lot? because it's not really that cool of a gimmick?
-
It will never work out due to money. Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo will always make it difficult on developers to even fonder the idea of making a cross-platform game. The only thing I see working would be a game that is playable over Xbox and Games for Windows (like Shadowrun).

Depends on the games. Some of them would be unfair for the console player VS the PC player. Counter Strike would come to mind. Unless it were co-op modes only or something like that for FPS's or shooters.
