Disney has laid off the staff of LucasArts and cancelled all current projects.
Staff were informed of the shutdown this morning, according to a reliable Kotaku source. Some 150 people were laid off, and both of the studio's current projects—Star Wars: First Assault and Star Wars 1313—were cancelled. Disney will still use the LucasArts name to license games, but the studio is no more.
Hypothetically, the company could license First Assault or 1313 to a different developer, but those would be different games entirely.
“After evaluating our position in the games market, we’ve decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company’s risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games," LucasArts parent company LucasFilm said in a statement. "As a result of this change, we’ve had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles.”
This comes after weeks and months of rumors involving the studio, which was acquired by Disney last fall. In September, LucasArts put a freeze on all hiring and product announcements, which many staff saw as the beginning of the end. In February, we started hearing rumors that the studio might be shuttered. Today, it's official: the iconic development house is gone.
The company was acquired as part of a mega-merger last year where Disney acquired LucasFilm and its sibling company from Lucas. Maniac Mansion, one of LucasArts' first self-published titles, introduced the "SCUMM" game engine driving several well known point-and-click adventure titles the company published throughout the 1990s. The Secret of Monkey Island, created by Ron Gilbert and co-written by Double Fine's Tim Schafer, is one of the publisher's best-known graphical adventures using the engine.
The publisher's apogee was certainly in the 1990s, when a wave of Star Wars-themed titles for the PC—such as Dark Forces, X-Wing and Rebel Assault—were supplemented by games like the strategy title Afterlife, the Sam & Max series, and Schafer's Full Throttle.
In the 2000s, the company became more reliant on its Star Wars products and licenses sold to other developers as new efforts like Fracture failed to take hold. The decade's most notable successes—Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Star Wars: Battlefront—were both externally developed, by BioWare and Pandemic Studios, respectively. LucasArts' last title to see mainstream success was 2008's Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. A 2010 sequel didn't live up to expectations. The last game published by LucasArts was Kinect Star Wars for the Xbox 360 last year, a game widely panned by critics.
Sauce.
All I can say is. . . -blam!- Disney.

WELL, GREAT.

Edited by ROBERTO jh: 4/3/2013 9:26:51 PMEh, LucasArts wasn't very good at development anyway. All of their best games were outsourced. Battlefront? Pandemic. KOTOR? BioWare and Obsidian. Jedi Knight? Raven and Vicarious. Rogue Squadron? Factor 5. Their best recent in-house game was Force Unleashed, and even that wasn't brilliant. What quality there was, was subsequently tarnished by FU II. And don't get me started on Kinect. The most disappointing thing out of all this is that 1313 and First Assault are cancelled. Both have great potential, but considering the likelihood they'll be picked up, I'm not worried. I just hope they stay true to their original vision, particularly 1313's M rating.
-
Was it really nessaccary to cancel 1313 and First assault, when they could just move it to a new developer?
-
Disney WAT R U DOING DISNEY STAHP
-
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK YOU DISNEY!
-
Let's be honest, Lucasarts hasn't had a good game in a long, long time.
-
This could be a good thing. While LucasArts may be gone, they said that they'd still license other peoples' games, and some of the greatest Star Wars games ever, were made by external developers. So don't look at this as a bad thing, look at it as a chance for more quality Star Wars games and less Kinect Star Wars.
-
What!?
-
Not surprising. LucasArts has been a farce for some time now. There are much more capable publishers that can do more with Star Wars once they have the license. You want Battlefront III? Activision, for all their flak, will be smart enough to make that game.
-
I'm pissed. I have no faith in the future of Star Wars anymore. No 1313. No First Assault. No Force Unleashed 3. No Battlefront 3.
-
Damn you Disney!

Putting people out of work is obviously bad, but I'm kinda glad to hear this. LucasArts was terrible.
-
... WTF... I knew Disney was going to screw something up, but this is overkill

There has never been a more appropriate time for this.
-
1313 cancelled? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
-
LAWLZ perhaps disney can create better games than that studio did.
-
-blam!-
-
It seems like the Star Wars franchise is doomed to have 90% completed games cancelled and thrown in the dumpster.
-
But wasn't 1313 like, nearly completely finished? Or am I completely wrong?
-
Son. Of. A. BITCH.
-
I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened.
-
I gotta say Carland is fun, but this sucks for Lucas arts employees. Though I'm sure they'll get picked up by other developers.
-
Edited by Jiggleslinky: 4/3/2013 6:37:46 PMThank goodness. Now they can't -blam!- with the series anymore.
-
My mother-blam!-ing calculated ass response. But also, thank -blam!- those assholes can finally stop ruining games.
-
WHY DIDNT THEY MAKE A -blam!-ING REPUBLIC COMMANDO 2 FIRST?! It literally would've saved them.
