Both are massive, popular fantasy epics, and in my opinion the two best fantasy works there are. Out of these two, which do you guys prefer?
It's a tough call, but as much as I love Harry Potter, LotR gets a slight edge for me. It just was so....epic. The concept of the journey, the encounters, etc, just gets me so pumped. The LotR trilogy remains as some of my favorite movies of all time.
I will say though, I do find the Harry Potter books easier to reread than the Lord of the Rings books.

He even created proper languages for the races of Middle Earth. That's why it gets my vote. Also Gandalf. I enjoy Harry Potter, but I find both the books and the films to be seriously overrated. Especially the films. Was there any need in two parts to Deathly Hallows? Part 1 was just a big "travel the country doing bugger all" fest. You could skip half the movie and you wouldn't have missed anything crucial to the plot.
