Here's the final score from the info released today concerning Adam Lanza from a great LA Times article:
154 shots of .223 fired from Bushmaster AR-15 at Sandy Hook Elementary from unspecified quantity of magazines.
Found on Lanza's person:
3x30 round magazines (all full) of .223 ammo
14 rounds in magazine left in Bushmaster
1 round in chamber of Bushmaster
Glock 10mm
Sig Sauer 9mm
12 gauge shotgun found in car
Found at home:
1,400+ rounds of ammo
gun safe was found *unlocked with no sign of being broken into*
Lanza's mom bought all "guns used in shootings"
various other weapons, destroyed hard drive
NRA "certificates" for both Adam and mom
Holiday card from mom to Adam with a check to buy another gun
****
The amazing thing is that he could have fired off at least 105 more .223 rounds and an untold number of pistol rounds before he killed himself.
I know that overall, assault rifles account for a very small number of total gun homicide deaths, but is that really an excuse to let this kind of stuff continue? I mean, it's ridiculous to allow people access to 30 round magazines, unlimited ammo, and military style rifles.

Edited by Aryan Barbarian : 3/30/2013 2:46:24 AMYour info is wrong, he had the Bushmaster in his car... Don't listen to places like CNN or Fox that lean one way or another on the Gun debate. Their lying

Your title sounds like the opening line to a Bushmaster commercial. "4/5 killers recommend Bushmaster!"
-
The thing about unlimited ammo, it's not like they walk into a gun store and say "can I buy 1500 bullets". They go in and buy 100, next week 200, then in 2 weeks 150 rounds, and keep that going for a while and they amass all the ammo in a stash.
Amusing that you accuse Recon of making a straw man argument when you blatantly did the same thing right here. Nobody has said "we should continue to be allowed to have 30 round magazines, unlimited ammunition, and military-style rifles because assault rifles account for a very small number of total gun deaths." What people have said -- completely accurately -- is that these elements of firearms have nothing to do with the lethality of a gun or its desirability to criminals, and the proof of that is the nearly unanimous UNpopularity of assault-style rifles in gun crimes in the U.S. Please don't be a hypocrite. I think your opinion, like most people in favor of these silly gun control measures, rests on nothing more than your last sentence -- you think it's ridiculous, but you can't really say why.

Edited by Recon Number 54: 3/28/2013 9:27:48 PMI have a Bushmaster. It's a great gun. Are you saying that I am somehow more likely to become batshit nuts because of my purchase choice? Are you saying that I actually AM, batshit nuts due to my choice? Are you saying that the object is what made Lanza a depraved killer? Are you saying that it is the potential of the firearm that makes it dangerous and something that no one should have? Please let me know what you are trying to get at because if you are trying to make a point about Bushmaster AR's... it may be a clear point to you (in your head where this all makes sense) but you are not explaining your point either clearly or concisely enough for me to see it. PS: more "killers" choose handguns. Your subject line is false. If I recall correctly either .25 ACP or 9mm pistols are the "weapon of choice" in most firearm violence. But I understand, you're emotional and so, you wanted to make an attention getting subject line.

For the love of God, the civilian AR-15 IS NOT AN ASSAULT RIFLE.

Sounds like he was aching to use the weapons he had and he did.

Edited by me123456789: 3/29/2013 1:54:01 AMBushmaster is also one of the most popular big Brands, usually number 1 in yearly sales. They show up more often because there are simple a lot more of that brand out there. Same with Glock and Sig.

Real men own Bushmasters.

Don't forget to stock up on ammo.

Edited by Spooter: 3/28/2013 11:00:37 PMIn simple terms, this thread is retarded. For those attempting to have a serious argument with someone who cannot possibly understand what it is you're trying to contribute/say, I commend you for sticking with it and being logical, while at the same time I feel shame because you're basically conversing with a wall. That wall is you OP, and while I have no strong opinion one way or the other, I do think you could be a tad more tolerant of others views. Good game guys, I'll see you later.

What a great endorsement.

A Bushmaster AR-15 is not an assault rifle, nor is it "military style" (which is another made-up term similar to "assault weapon" which categorises arms based on how scary they look).

"Bushmaster" sounds like a republican porno. That's all I have to contribute to this discussion.

Firstly, the style of the rifle has absolutely no merit in discerning its effectiveness. The only difference between an AR-15 and a semi-auto hunting rifle is its appearance. Secondly, it takes less than one second to reload and get back into a firing position. Ten rounds or thirty rounds doesn't matter. The amount of magazines would be more important, not the individual magazine capacity. Also during the Clinton AWB, criminals were very seldom arrested carrying "approved" magazines. Most of them were carrying the standard 15- or 30- round magazines. Also, loading up a new magazine every ten rounds is very annoying and tedious when you're at the range. Thirdly, Adam Lanza illegally acquired his weapons. He murdered his mother and stole them. She was irresponsible for not having them locked up, but that doesn't change that fact that the guns were still illegally acquired. Adam Lanza tried to purchase a gun multiple times, but was denied every time because he failed the background check every time. The gun shop owner (FFL holder) is required to do a background check for every sale. This isn't a gun problem. It's a problem with mental healthcare in this country. Mental healthcare isn't readily available to detect and treat the mentally disturbed. Fixing mental healthcare would do a great deal more to prevent shootings than instituting another "assault weapons ban" or "magazine ban." It would also be possible. Logistically, there is no possible way to get rid of all the weapons and magazines already in the US. Other countries that outlaw firearms have never had 300,000,000 firearms legally owned. If there are 300,000,000 firearms legally owned in the US, how many magazines do you think there are?
