The content is free, but we have to pay to use the infrastructure in order to access that content. What if every computer on the planet was a node capable of long-distance, fast wireless communication - we could be the infrastructure - the internet would be free.

I'm sure there's no law against you setting up your own internet if you can figure out how to do it. Otherwise, you're paying for services, energy, and the time it takes to support you.
