Now that we can even like specific comments, how should those likes be handled? Should we see a list on each comment of who liked what comment/thread? Should we see a number of how many likes are on a given comment/thread? If the dislikes outweigh the likes, should that number be negative or should it stay at zero until it becomes positive again? Should we keep the same system we have now of not seeing any of it? If so, why? Do you have another idea for how it should work? If so, what is it?

The thing i dislike is that if someone likes my post, it doesn't tell me who liked it. It just gives me their avatar, which doesn't help much. I'd be fine with just getting a name in the notifications. I have a feeling that liked being visible could potentially cause the same issues as polls killing threads. If someone can leave a mark on a thread without posting they will (because deep down we're all lazy bastards) and threads would deteriorate into a pile of likes and votes with no replies.

Who has liked a post should be publically available, just as posts are not anonymous. Anyway, likes already aren't private since the "likee" gets a notification of the "liker".

Surprisingly I'm fine with the current system because it's more of means of communicating and sharing topics than just pushing popularity. The best discussion that can be had is a discussion free from bias; it weighs and considers all posts. If likes were shown as a counter or with a list of names, it would only serve to add bias to posts. The reality is that people who want to post things such as "This" or "What he said" really aren't contributing anything the discussion, and thus should not post and simply play the role of spectator. To have users who are unable to contribute to discussion constantly adding bias and promoting certain posts is anything but helpful. Additionally, a post should be distinguished by its content, not the number of likes it has. I hope most of you realize that you're trying to implement a feature that is literally the embodiment of the bandwagon fallacy.

I'd prefer that no numbers or names were shown. I consider myself a bit of a purist, and keeping the "Like" feature solely for moving good topics and replies to the top of the heap would keep all of the positives of liking a topic without any of the negatives, such as individuals demanding/requesting people to like their posts. Ultimately, I feel that those individuals who want to see numbers simply want the ego boost. We had great content before the like feature, so advertising the details of who and how many shouldn't be required to keep that great content coming.

I think it would be fine as long as only the number of likes was visible. As long as discussion doesn't turn into a huge contest for likes, it should be fine, especially since there's no reputation of any kind for individual users that could preempt such things.

I think showing the number of likes would be cool but not necessarily the names. I can understand why they may not want to show the numbers of likes (or dislikes for that matter). Think about it. If one sees something with a handful of likes (or dislikes), they may be more inclined to "pile on" and vote with the mob mentality. I can personally say that sometimes I've seen comments on Reddit where I'll upvote or downvote only to undo my action because I caught myself just piling on. It's not inherently a bad thing; I'm just pointing out why it may not be the best idea. Also, I know you didn't mention dislikes, Z, I just thought it was worth including them for discussion's sake.

Edited by Duardo: 3/22/2013 3:40:10 AMthese new polls look SICK! We now get notifications for Likes, so I don't think we need to see a list of who liked it.

I posted my feedback in deejs thread about this, and I agree. I think the display would be a benefit so when someone posts something that I agree with and have nothing to add, I can show them and everyone else that the post has my stamp of approval. Now, I have to like it and then comment "What he said." If I just like it, all I'm doing is anonymously bumping it up for all the users who use the popular setting for threads
