I genuinely want to know what you guys think.
IMO, I think the over all quality of games would be better, because their would be less rushed games trying to get the game out before another CoD comes out and sucks up all the money of everyone who plays FPS's. Now I;m not saying CoD ruined FPS's, but that's just what i think might have happened.
What about you?

I think games would follow the Battlefield formula.. Which I think is by far one of the most realistic shooters that mainstream gamers play.
-
We would have elegant games, for a more civilized age.

Better question would be where FPS gaming would be without Halo. I feel like MP AI would be substantially better, instead of being mostly neglected for a decade on the consoles. Probably custom game browsers rather than matchmaking, or matchmaking would be supplemental rather than replace browsers. Personally I feel like while Halo did a good job bringing some elements to the forefront like dual stick shooting and seamless vehicle transitions, overall many elements poisoned the genre in the long term. Call of Duty can be attributed in many respects to what Halo did to console FPS.
-
Arena shooters wouldn't be kept in the closet.
-
Still aping Halo.

It would have been interesting. I think the majority of FPS games would probably have then be structured similarly to how Battlefield or the first couple Halo games were. I also think that more FPS players would feel that elitism that a lot of people had back around Halo 2 and Halo 3. I also think that players of one FPS game would either be relatively friendly to players of another FPS, or they would have a greater hatred for them. There is no end to the possibilities of what could have resulted.

It would have been slightly better

No better, no worse.

Yes, yes there would and they more than likely be a lot better than the FPS that we have now.

Edited by VIC: 3/19/2013 6:38:57 PMReal Answer: Military shooters were already popular. Someone else would've got the idea to release them annually and rake in cash and we'd be where we are now. It'd just be another franchise, not "Call of Duty." Call of Duty hating answer that people want to hear: OMG ALL FPS WOULD BE BETTAR WITHOUT C0CKOFDOODY. I don't like the CoD games but the hate they get is a little unreasonable.
-
Game developers would stick with their own ideas instead of half-assing it and making their games more generic Cod clones.
-
Well being fair to Cod, Cod4 brought the genre into the more realistic time frame instead of the at the time dying ww2 genre. So without cod we would still be shooting -godwinslaw!-.

The definte good thing that would occur is none of the scummy YouTube commentator stuff that happens today and the several last few years that sprang up from the Call of Duty YouTube commentators (ChickenWingsOfredemption, monkeyth1rstboy etc).

Less ADS.
-
More innovation would be present.
-
Each franchise would be more unique instead of banking off the CoD 4 formula.
-
good.

In a better position, one way or another.

We'd probably still be killing nothing but Germans.
