Just beat DmC: Devil May Cry on the PC and absolutely loved it, always been a fan of hack'n'slash games.
In my haste after beating it I immediately ordered the DmC HD collection for Xbox 360 for about 15$ on Amazon. From what I understand they are in different universes, will I enjoy the old ones as much as the new DmC?

Awesome series. In my opinion the newest game gave the series something fresh and interesting instead of ruining it, but that's just me.

I thought Devil May Cry was fun until it recycled bosses and became way too hard to even finish. Devil May Cry 2 was pretty easy but somewhat of a mess. Then 3 was made for the hardcore fans and I gave up in frustration.

I haven't played the new one but the originals were good, and challenging. 3 in particular is very hard.

DmC: Devil May Cry is a reboot to the old Devil May Cry quadtrilogy. I grew up playing Devil May Cry/2/3/4 and watching the anime so my opinion is biased when I say that the originals are the better games. However I do love playing DmC: Devil May Cry because I think it is going in the right direction. However despite it being Devil May Cry/2/3/4, that is not the canonical order just so you're aware. If you're going to play it in canonical order then it goes Devil May Cry 3/2/1/4.
