WHO WILL REIGN SUPREME?! | test starts around 3:08
The handheld gaming market has been steadily chugging along since the original Gameboy, and each generation has added new features from backlights and wi-fi to touchscreens and expandable memory. But this has come with a cost, as you will see in the video that none of the current gen consoles can outlast the originals.
The data below will definitely give you a sense of how battery life - arguably the most important aspect of portable gaming - has tremendously diminished in the new generation. The iTouches and PS Vita were omitted because they had auto-power off features:
•Sony PSP: 3 hours, 45 minutes
•Nintendo 3DS: 3 hours, 55 minutes
•Nintendo DSi: 4 hours, 2 minutes
•Nintendo DS Lite (Silver): 4 hours, 30 minutes
•Nintendo 3DS XL: 4 hours, 32 minutes
•Nintendo DS Lite (Yellow): 4 hours, 38 minutes
•Game Boy Advance SP (Backlit): 4 hours, 50 minutes
•Game Boy Micro: 5 hours, 30 minutes
•Nintendo DSi XL: 5 hours, 45 minutes
•Nintendo DS: 6 hours, 1 minute
•Game Boy Advance SP (Frontlit, Black #1): 8 hours, 2 minutes
•Game Boy Advance SP (Frontlit, Black #2): 8 hours, 5 minutes
•Nintendo 3DS with Nyco battery pack: 9 hours, 11 minutes
•Game Boy Advance SP (Frontlit, Silver): 11 hours, 56 minutes
•Nintendo 3DS with Mugen battery pack: 13 hours, 50 minutes
•Game Boy: 15 hours, 30 minutes (interrupted; clocked at 30 hours in another vid)
•Game Boy Advance: 29 hours, 32 minutes
•Game Boy Color: 35 hours, 45 minutes
One thing they neglected to make a point of was that these were on their brightest settings. My yellow DS Lite can go for at least 13 hours on average on its lowest setting before going red, and it's said that 3DS's last longer when playing original DS games. Those of you still shopping around the handheld market may want to consider external battery packs, seeing as how the current gen systems died out very quickly in this video.
Which Console have you gotten the most playtime out of?
-
I like the gameboy color when its sunny because you can see the game better than in the dark to bad its the opposite for the new generations
-
Am I the only one who wants to buy all of the handhelds again?
-
Game Boy Color. Oracle of Ages/Seasons really brings out the hours. But I played Emerald on my SP for what must have been an eternity... I've never kept track of how long the batteries last though.
-
To be fair, handheld power's come a long way since the Gameboy - the Vita's almost capable of PS3 graphics. It makes sense that the battery life will take a hit. I probably played the DS the most out of any handheld when I think about it, although the Gameboy Colour got a lot of time too with Pokemon Yellow. But the DS was the first handheld where I played games other than Pokemon, so it probably got more time. Probably spent over 100 hours on the Ace Attorney series alone.

Battery technology, you suck.
-
I've never had an external battery pack that has actually worked...
-
Semi-relevant question, but does the 3DS have better graphics than the DS, or is the 3D feature the only difference?
-
Gameboy Advanced SP :) good times.
-
Over the years I've owned a few Gameboys. Pictured above is the only one that remains. It holds too much sentimental value to get rid of.
-
The only game I ever get around to playing on my PSP is Monster Hunter.
-
Mine would be the Game boy color since it was the first handheld I owned but I do have 3 psp's The PSP 1000 and two PSP 3000's but handheld gaming in my opinion is a pointless race, companies are trying to bring console entertainment to a portable system and it's never going to be as good as sitting on a couch and having a controller its almost as annoying as the motion control bandwagon (Kinect, Wii and Sony wizard wand).
-
Its no surprise that the less complicated ones lasted longer the gameboy uses the simplest form of display out there I have the same thing on my USB drive to show how much memory is used and I bet if I didnt plug it in the display would stay there for years.
-
Holy cow, the GBA lasted 29.5 hours? That explains so much. I am disappointed in the battery life of the 3DS though... I will have to take this into consideration.
-
My DS Lite can go for weeks, while its closed.

Edited by asdasdasdasdasdf: 3/19/2013 10:40:16 PMMy psp has always lasts aaaaages...but then I only ever use the music player, picture viewer and *shudders* that god awful web browser, so that may be why. Perhaps playing games, it's closer to your 3 3/4 hours you got here. EDIT: On second thought, I actually turn it off when it's in my pocket, I just forget that I do that because it loads up exactly where you left it when you turn it back on again.

So basically the older systems had WAY more battery life than current systems. Awesome? :/
-
My SEGA Game Gear will outlast all chalOHWAIT IT'S ALREADY DEAD Anybody have some AA's?
-
Huh, brings back memories.
-
This makes me miss my GBA :(
-
I saw this 3 days ago when I was trying to decide what system to buy.
