1. Bungie didn't exactly 'own' Halo. 2. I smell the possibility for a wonderful moa-like Easter egg in Destiny somewhere.

Bungie didn't sell Halo to 343. Bungie was owned by Microsoft but wanted to return to being an independent company. The conditions for this were that Bungie would leave the Halo IP in Microsofts possession. 343 Industries is a Microsoft owned company that was created to take over for Bungie when they left. Honestly Bungie was getting bored making Halo anyways.
