The Maryland General Assembly approved a measure Friday to repeal the state's death penalty.
The House of Delegates voted 82 to 56 Friday to pass a bill already approved by the Senate, according to the AP. Maryland makes the 18th state to ban capital punishment.
Gov. Martin O'Malley (D) is expected to sign the bill.
The AP reports:

Supporters of repeal argue that capital punishment is costly, error-prone, racially biased and a poor deterrent. Opponents say it's a necessary tool to punish those who commit the most egregious crimes.
Maryland has five men on death row, though the measure approved Friday makes it clear the governor can commute their sentences to life in prison. The state's last execution took place in 2005, during the administration of Republican Gov. Robert Ehrlich.[/quote]

Edited by Quantum: 3/16/2013 10:21:39 PMGood, anyone who knows anything about how long death penalty convictions last, and their success rate, would realize that the death penalty is a terrible thing. The death penalty supporter group also seems to be in a similar demographic to people who call themselves as "pro-life", which I find to be very ironic.

The death penalty should be banned in all states. -It costs more than life in prison -It violates international human rights laws -It's unfair (expensive lawyer = prison, not so expensive lawyer = death) No modern country should have the death penalty. We're doing pretty well without it here in the Nordic countries. +1 to Maryland

Good. Citizens being executed by the state is the mark of terrible regimes like that in Iran, or that of Stalin. A civilized nation can do without these things, and deliver better justice in the process.

Damnit, one less state to participate in my Death Row inmate hunger games.

This country is a joke. Only in America can you get free dinners for the rest of your life when you kill someone. If you have sufficient proof, just take them out back and off them like an old dog. Cost effective.

That's it, I'm becoming a local politician. I'll be damned if my state bans capital punishment. It wasn't made to be a deterrent, it was made to administer justice.

Am I the only that feels like a life in prison would be worse than a simple death sentence?

If they have enough evidence to put you in for life in prison I don't see how they can't execute you. While it could be argued whether it deters crime or not, I say do it to prevent repeat offenders. Especially something like the Theatre shooter where it is 100% it was them.
