Hey Bungie - You know that Job you got up there?
Ciao,
I know where the answer will be going anyway, but it always helps to find out more, they always say 'knowledge is king'. I think they say that.
I often stare at your careers page, and dribble a little at the prospect and dream of working with such an awesome set of dudes(uni sexual term of course) and learning what there is to learn underneath the quilt that is the video game industry.

This isn't the first time I have mentioned [url=https://twitter.com/Bungie/status/164062185570582528]careers at Bungie[/url] to you. We spoke once, you and I.
I am finishing up my degree in Computing, learnt a ton of stuff, pointless citing it as its useless in the post. I learnt the various cruel mistress ' that are programming and expanded my reach within them after seeing various jobs long ago. My Goal: Work in a game studio. You are one of the best, and I know you guys value character(look at your staff?!), but skills are important. Unfortunately I believe you are [i]currently[/i] out of my reach, as I am across that mass of water, the Atlantic Ocean, in the UK.
I know what I am going to do when I finish in about 2 months. I am going to start building games, big and small, and build up an almighty portfolio to shake the very foundations of employers, but from there, how do I get to you.
So I come to my question. Would you hire someone (to quote some rap) 'fresh outta college'? Straight from university? Given they had the requirements and got the Bungie Seal? The Bungie podcast was a great inspiration when you would interview various employees, the routes they took in life, their experiences and how they ended up with you.
Would you 'assist' in helping relocate from one land mass to another as an employer?
And finally, what pathways, routes, or activities would you recommend a guy like me do to get to meet Mr.Bungie.

They are your best source of wisdom. The dominant theme in all of my conversations with people who have joined our team is that their experience gained in side projects was the most valuable element of their skillset. If you want to make games, don't wait for someone to hire you to start doing it.

1 ReplyLoving what is is you're doing is in my opinion the single most important element. If you love to do it, it becomes less about gaining experience and building a portfolio (you'll be doing that anyway as you continue to pursue it) and more about exercising a natural function like eating or breathing. Being able to carry on a lengthy conversation with enthusiasm (inspirations and methods from the past and present, your ideas about the industry's future, how the best in the field do it and why you agree or disagree with their methods) comes from not considering it your job or career but rather a part of you. That starts with love. Best of luck.

3 RepliesWow, I hope this all works out of you dude, Bungie is my dream job but i'm not smart enough I really wish I had the drive and motivation to do all that. I don't really have any help that I can give you, but I am wishing you good luck I hope Bungie takes you in and hires you. I think you would be working at one of the greatest jobs in America working at Bungie.

1 ReplySounds like you've got things on the right track. Building up that portfolio is going to be crucial from everything Bungie has told us. They have definitely hired talented people right out of college -- our very own B.net Overlord, Achronos, was hired by Bungie straight out of Virginia Tech. Others have been as well, though I assume that they were building up their portfolios long before they graduated. You probably should too -- no need to wait until you graduate. And yes, of course there's a relocation assistance program. As long as you don't mind living in a van down by the river :-) To meet Bungie employees to talk through things in person, it's easy -- just attend a major gaming convention. PAX Prime (held in the late summer/early fall) is the best one since it's located in Seattle and Bungie always has numerous employees floating around, whether in their official capacity or not.

1 ReplyFrom all the stuff the Breaking In articles have taught me, you need a good resume before you can get an interview, some experience, and that it's good to plan out a whole lot of things they could possibly ask you during a possible interview.
