Appearing on a balcony over the square, he asked the faithful to pray for him. Cheers erupted as he gave a blessing.
The first Latin American and the first Jesuit to be pontiff, he will call himself Francis I.
An hour earlier, white smoke from the Sistine Chapel chimney announced the new Pope's election.
Pope Francis, 76, replaces Benedict XVI, who resigned last month at the age of 85, saying he was not strong enough to lead the Church.
French Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran announced his election with the Latin words "Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum. Habemus Papam" ("I announce to you a great joy. We have a Pope").
The election was met with thunderous applause at the cathedral in Buenos Aires, his home city.
Correspondents say he was a surprise choice and not among a small group of frontrunners before the election.
Many observers were also expecting a younger pope to be elected.
The 115 cardinals have been in isolation since Tuesday afternoon, and held four inconclusive votes.
At least 77 of them, or two-thirds, would have had to vote for a single candidate for him to be elected Pope.
Before the conclave began, there was no clear frontrunner to replace Benedict.
Crowds with umbrellas massed in the square flying flags from around the world.
The Catholic News Agency said people were running through the streets of Rome, hoping to reach St Peter's Square in time for the appearance of the new Pope.
Thoughts? I don't like him. Peter Turkson and Christoph Schonborn are probably my personal choices out of everyone in the entire papal conclave. Though I wouldn't mind if John Paul II rose from the dead and became pope again. But then again, I'm an atheist, so therefore I'm a heretic and my opinion doesn't matter to them.

He is another women hating bigot. Its not like we could have expected better from the clergy.

Edited by Diplomat: 3/16/2013 4:21:47 AMSo far, I like him (granted, it's only been three days). The Jesuits have a history of not being entirely batshit crazy, and have been excellent at reforming Church policy and doctrine when allowed too. Very smart blokes.
-
He seems like as hard ass. The Catholic church needs a leader like that.
-
Why does he want to be called Francis? Do all Popes change their names?
-
From what I've learned about him, he seems like a very humble man, but he does have a lot of work ahead of him. I think he may be able to reconnect with the average Catholic like JPII was able to, but I don't know if he'll be able to tackle the issues at the top of the Vatican. But maybe he'll get the ball rolling for his eventual successor.

Edited by OptimusPrime 15: 3/16/2013 1:52:56 AMWhy does everyone keep calling him Latin American? Doesn't anyone know that alot of Italians moved to Argentina in the early-mid 19th century? The guy doesn't even LOOK Latino. Every news network is calling him that. His entire background is Italian... it's just bugging me is all.
-
Seems like a good choice, particularly with the controversy surrounding the Vatican's funds. However, I don't support the papacy or the doctrine of papal authority.
-
From everything I've read of him since he was elected, nothing bad about him has turned up. He seems to be a kind and humble man, and a good choice for the Papacy.

Here we go again...

Edited by Jaaake AU: 3/14/2013 1:23:25 PMHow many underage boys do you need to touch to become Pope?
OVER 9000
I'm sure Jorge will do a wonderful job as Pope. What does he need to do? Say a few blessings and wear a hat well? I think he could rock the hat.
-
Catholics gonna catholic. Anyone who thought this guy would be different was fooling themselves.

Edited by Dr. Phil: 3/14/2013 12:31:39 AM>Sees new pope is old white guy >Assumes is progressive >Actually looks up pope >Not progressive /facepalm The church is always going to elect old white guys to sit on their ass and do nothing (except touch boys).

And once again he hates homosexuals, wonderful. Glad to see nothing has changed.
-
Does anyone know if he suports the use of condoms. Thats almost all the thing that I care now.
-
Considering I don't give a damn about the Catholic church or any branch of the Christian faith, this doesn't affect me at all! :D
-
Pope Jorge sounds way more badass and than friggin Francis. Francis is a name for pretty boys and gay eurotrash.
-
What's so bad about Pope Jorge? Is he covering up the sex scandals like the previous pope?
-
Maaan, I do NOT envy this guy.
-
Non-catholics around the world shrug their shoulders and think "Um.... ok?".
-
Uhg, religion, no thanks. Too many child abusers there.
-
"men and women who have deep-seated homosexual tendencies must be accepted with respect and compassion." -Pope Francis Guys, that's honestly the best you're going to get out of the Catholic church. Anyone who thinks one of the most strict religious institution in the world is going to turn their backs on a five thousand year old teaching overnight is incredibly naiive. Honestly, this new pope seems to be a humble man of the people. He lives in a small apartment in Buenos Aires and denied the private Archbishop car, taking a bus to work. I'm looking forward to see what he does with social welfare
-
And at 76, I'm sure he will bring a bright youthful flare to the job!
-
Edited by BACE: 3/13/2013 9:49:36 PMwhelp, lightly looked into this guy and i already hate him, but it's not like this guy could possibly affect my life, right?
