I believe many gamers know of the spaceship MMO EVE Online, even if they haven't played it. Part of what makes EVE unique is that it is a persistent world; that is, changes that occur in the world remain for all players, and do not reset on log-outs or even server refreshes.
We all are familiar with Bungie's new phrase, "shared-world shooter". We know what that means in terms of playing on the micro-level; spontaneous cooperative matchmaking and play in individual missions. But what does that mean on the macro-level: the galactic level? I highly doubt it can be a persistent-world FPS, because whoever first reaches a world, kills the occupants, and loots their gear would be the only success stories in the game while latecomers to the game find all the easily-accessible worlds stripped bare of quickly-attainable resources.
Given this game-breaking parameter, will Destiny only follow individual stories? Let's say I haven't visited Mars, even though half of the player population has gone through and wiped it clean. Will Destiny give me a whole new copy of Mars to play with? Will Destiny give me my own version of the galaxy to play around in and, as a Gamespot article suggests, only bring players into my world who are on the same point of their individual quests on that planet as me? Or will the game be big enough to accommodate everyone's individual impact in the world?

I just wrote out a stupidly long comment but I've decided to just cut it right down. I think the game will use cloud storage for the save file which you and your friends sync with while in the game-world. This would allow all members to join up at any time (unlike in Minecraft) and not end up with conflicting versions. Judging by how they've laughed of comments about Destiny being an MMO I don't think the game with have large scale public play in the story mode. The menu system visible in the ViDoc shows "Strike" and "Raid" as game mode options, with Strike using a "Random hopper". "Strike" could be cooperative public matchmaking, with the "Raid" being smaller scenarios for you and your friends to play together and gain XP and loot items. Or it could be the other way round. Back to story mode, enemies probably scale in difficulty with your characters level. Loot could be shared, like in Dead Space 3, or it could be dropped in local client-side instances where the loot seen by one player is different to that of another and you cannot interact with the loot in another players game, unless they trade with you. It could also be a combination, with ammo and similar loot and resources shared and special items like weapons spawned in client-side instances. Whether I'm right or wrong about any of this I have no doubt Destiny will be great seeing as it has reportedly been in the pipeline since ODST.

well when we got a look at the different modes in the vidoc, maybe different modes aren't for playing different maps, perhaps things just work differently depending on what mode you're playing. like if you want to play in the same world as everyone else or if you just want to play with just your small group with no random intrusions. and hell, maybe one of the modes just has no story missions and everyone can kill each other, maybe that's where factions come in. I hope its not as you described OP, I wouldn't mind some aspects, but not a story changing system like that that ruins the game for players who are late to the party

This game is not an MMO. When they say Shared World Shooter it's probably only like 20 people.

I guess I would hope that loot/monsters would not be "gone" once a player has already reached them. This would not make sense with a story line and could easily ruin people's experience. What I am hoping for is some consistent areas that remain unchanged for story purposes, but with certain areas -or entire worlds, for that matter- that can be changed somehow by the general population. I don't know if this would be as customizable as Minecraft, but letting players have some effect on the universe would be a truly awesome feature.

My guess is that enemies will probably respawn frequently so no area will ever be tapped out by other players, or become unplayable just because you visited once. I think they will have something in place to give you reasons to visit certain areas several times if you feel so inclined to try adventuring there again.

I think the reason that Bungie has avoided using the term MMO is because of this. The game world will be shared, but only to a degree. It's said the game plays like Halo, I couldn't imagine them filling intricate worlds only once. Especially considering how fast you can run through Halo if you know what you're doing.
